AFOQT study guide: how to study for the AFOQT

The best AFOQT study guide is one that matches the current test: Air Force ROTC tells candidates to review the official Form T prep materials closely, because some subtests have changed and commercial study guides may be based on previous versions. Build your plan around the 12 subtests, use ACT, SAT or GRE material for the verbal and math parts, and practise the aviation and spatial parts under time pressure.

How to study for the AFOQT

The Air Force’s own pamphlet says there is no best way to study for the AFOQT, because it measures general knowledge across many subject areas. A practical way to study for AFOQT success is to work subtest by subtest: take a timed diagnostic, rank the parts by weakness, and spend most of your time where the composites you need are weakest.

For commissioning, Verbal and Quantitative come first. For pilot, combat systems officer or air battle manager, add the aviation and spatial parts.

Official AFOQT study material

Air Force ROTC’s advice for AFOQT study is to review official study materials, and in particular the official Form T prep materials. The Air Force’s AFOQT Information Pamphlet contains sample items for every part with an answer key, but states that it is not designed to be used as a study guide.

Use official AFOQT study material for the format and the current subtest list, and other sources for content practice. Air Force ROTC notes that any ACT, SAT or GRE review material may be useful for the verbal and quantitative sections.

Choosing AFOQT books and study guides

Air Force ROTC points candidates to commercial AFOQT test-preparation guides as well, with a warning: commercial study guides may be based on previous versions of the test. Before you buy AFOQT books, check that the book covers the current subtests and says which form it is based on.

When you compare AFOQT study books, also check timing: the pamphlet gives Word Knowledge 25 items in 5 minutes and Table Reading 40 items in 7, so a good study guide for AFOQT practice includes timed sets, not just explanations.

AFOQT study guide PDF

The closest thing to an official AFOQT study guide PDF is the Air Force’s AFOQT Information Pamphlet, a free PDF with directions and sample items for every part. Keep in mind the Air Force’s own caveat that it is not a study guide, and that the pamphlet does not name the test form it reflects.

What each subtest asks of you

Every AFOQT guide should map onto what the subtests measure. The Air Force pamphlet describes them in one line each:

  • Verbal Analogies: reasoning and seeing relationships among words
  • Arithmetic Reasoning: using arithmetic to solve problems
  • Word Knowledge: words and their meanings
  • Math Knowledge: mathematical terms and principles
  • Instrument Comprehension: the position of an airplane in flight from its instruments
  • Block Counting: seeing into a 3-dimensional pile of blocks
  • Table Reading: reading a table quickly and accurately
  • Aviation Information, General Science, Rotated Blocks and Hidden Figures, plus the Self Description Inventory of personal traits and attitudes

AFOQT study guide 2026: check the form

If you pick an AFOQT study guide 2026 edition or any other, compare its subtest list with the official Form T prep materials before you rely on it. The edition year matters less than whether the guide reflects the current form.

Certsqill’s AFOQT questions are expert-developed and organised by subtest, with an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per subtest, so you can see which composites need more study time.
