ASE study guide: the free official guides and how to use them
The official ASE study guide for each test is free from ASE, and ASE calls it the best place to start. Each guide contains the test specifications, the task list, sample test questions and training resources, in English and Spanish. Study from the task list of your test: ASE calls it the blueprint, and it is where ASE tells you to look when you want to know what to review.

What is in an ASE study guide
Every ASE certification study guide follows the same pattern. ASE describes it as containing test specifications, task lists, sample test questions and training resources, and its need-to-know document adds that the time limit for each test is in the official study guide for that test.
The task list is the most useful part. ASE does not show you which questions you missed after a test; instead, its FAQ tells you to review the task list (blueprint) in the ASE study guide for your test. Treat it as your checklist.

Where to get a free ASE study guide
ASE says the best place to start is with a free ASE study guide. You download it from the page of your test series; the A series page, for example, links an English and a Spanish PDF for each test.
Because the guides are free and come from ASE, use them before you spend money on anything else. ASE’s official practice tests, which are paid, are about half as long as the real tests and are best used after you have worked through the task list.

ASE A1, A4, A5 and A6 study guides
The four most searched A-series guides, with the test they prepare for. Each test also has 10 unscored research questions on top of the scored ones.
- ASE A1 study guide: A1 Engine Repair, 45 scored questions in 75 minutes
- ASE A4 study guide: A4 Suspension & Steering, 40 scored questions in 60 minutes
- ASE A5 study guide: A5 Brakes, 45 scored questions in 75 minutes; this is the ASE study guide brakes candidates need
- ASE A6 study guide: A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems, 50 scored questions in 90 minutes

ASE study guide G1
G1 Auto Maintenance and Light Repair has its own guide in English and Spanish. The test has 55 scored questions plus 10 unscored research questions in 90 minutes, which is more scored questions than any A-series test. Work through the whole task list in the guide.

ASE L1 study guide and ASE L3 study guide
The advanced tests need more preparation. L1 Advanced Engine Performance Specialist has 50 scored questions in 2½ hours, and you must have passed A8 to register. Its questions use the Composite Vehicle Type 4 Reference, which appears as a pop-up during the test. ASE recommends reviewing it beforehand, so read it together with the ASE L1 study guide.
L3 Light Duty Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Specialist has 45 scored questions in 2 hours and requires A6 and A8. The ASE L3 study guide includes the Certification Test Reference document used in the test alongside the task list and sample questions.

ASE study books and ASE certification books
ASE’s own guides are free PDFs, not printed books. If you use ASE study books from other publishers, check them against the current task list in the official guide, which ASE calls the blueprint for your test.
ASE certification books are a supplement, not a replacement. The official guide tells you what is in scope; extra material is useful only for the tasks you are still weak on.

Using an ASE test study guide: a simple plan
Our suggested approach, not an ASE schedule: read the task list for your test and mark each task you could not explain to a colleague. Study those first, then answer the sample questions in the ASE test study guide, then practise with timed questions by task area.
Certsqill’s ASE question bank has expert-developed questions, an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per task area, so you can see which part of the task list still needs work before you book the test.
