Bar exam prep courses and review courses
A bar exam prep course is optional: none of the jurisdiction pages we checked in NCBE’s Bar Admission Guide lists one as an eligibility requirement, and NCBE itself sells practice materials rather than a full course. What a good course has to cover is set by NCBE: the seven MBE subjects, the MEE areas and the MPT for the legacy UBE, or the foundational concepts and lawyering skills of the NextGen UBE, plus any local law component of your jurisdiction.

What a bar exam prep course should cover
Check any course against the exam you will actually sit. For the legacy UBE that means MBE practice in civil procedure, constitutional law, contracts, criminal law and procedure, evidence, real property and torts; essay writing across the MEE areas, including business associations; and timed MPT tasks, where you produce a document from a file of source documents and a supervising attorney’s memo.
For the NextGen UBE, the course must also train the skills NCBE tests directly: legal research, legal writing, issue spotting and analysis, investigation and evaluation, client counseling and advising, negotiation and dispute resolution, and client relationship and management. A course built only around the old MBE format leaves integrated question sets and performance tasks uncovered.

What NCBE offers: official practice, not a course
NCBE writes the multistate components, and its study aids include questions from previous exams. For the legacy UBE it sells, among others, the MBE Complete Practice Exam ($100), designed to emulate the full MBE; the MBE Complete Bundle ($200) with 500 questions and detailed explanations; the most recent MEE (six questions with analyses, $15); and the most recent MPT (two items with drafters’ point sheets, $20).
For the NextGen UBE, NCBE’s study aids are designed to mirror the test-day interface and timing and include official answer explanations and sample written responses. Free resources include sample questions for every component and a Bar Exam Study Basics video.

Bar exam review course or self-study?
A bar exam review course gives you structure: a schedule, lectures and graded essays. Self-study with official materials gives you the most exam-like questions at lower cost, but you have to build the schedule yourself and find feedback on your writing.
Whichever route you choose, judge it by three questions. Does it use or closely mirror NCBE’s question style? Does it grade your essays and performance tests, not just your multiple-choice answers? And does it cover the exam version your jurisdiction gives in your sitting, legacy UBE or NextGen UBE?

Local law components
Some UBE jurisdictions require a jurisdiction-specific law component before admission, and national courses do not always cover it. New York, for example, runs the New York Law Exam (NYLE) on its own dates; the next one is on December 17, 2026, with registration closing on November 17, 2026.
Ask your agency what the local component requires and plan separate study time for it.

Patent bar exam prep course options
The patent bar is the USPTO’s registration examination, not a state bar exam, so a regular bar course does not prepare you for it. It has 100 multiple-choice questions over two three-hour sessions, 90 of them scored, and you need 63 correct. The reference materials tested are available on the exam computer, so a patent bar exam prep course should train you to find answers in those materials quickly, not just to memorize rules.
The USPTO pages we checked do not recommend any commercial course. They point to a computer-delivered examination tutorial for preparation. The optional $300 review session through Prometric is a review of a failed exam, held within 60 days of the results notice, not a prep course.

Checking your readiness alongside a course
A course tells you what is tested; timed practice tells you whether you are ready. Certsqill’s bar exam question bank has expert-developed questions, an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per exam area.
