CNA study guide: what to study and where it comes from

The most reliable CNA study guide is the one your test vendor publishes: the state candidate handbook with its sample questions and official skills list. Pair it with the NNAAP content outline, which shows how the 60 scored written questions are split, and with the textbook from your approved training program.

Start with the official CNA exam study guide: your candidate handbook

Every state test vendor publishes a candidate handbook, and it is the closest thing to an official CNA exam study guide. Virginia’s Credentia handbook includes sample questions, a self-assessment reading test to help you decide between the written and oral exam, and the skills listing with the steps of each skill. Credentia’s sample questions page adds a correct-answer table.

Florida’s Prometric bulletin includes a 50-question sample test with an answer key. Use these samples to learn the question style, not to predict your score: Prometric states that performance on its sample test does not predict your actual result.

Study guide for CNA exam content: the NNAAP outline by items

If your state uses the NNAAP, the 2024 content outline tells you exactly how the 60 scored written items are distributed. Spend your time accordingly: basic nursing skills and activities of daily living together account for 34 of the 60 items.

  • Basic nursing skills — 21 items
  • Activities of daily living — 13 items
  • Emotional and mental health needs — 5 items
  • Client rights — 5 items
  • Self care and independence — 4 items
  • Communication — 4 items
  • Member of the health care team — 4 items
  • Legal and ethical behavior — 3 items
  • Spiritual and cultural needs — 1 item

Study the skills from the official checklist

For the skills test, the checklist is the study guide. Prometric’s Florida exam page offers the clinical skills checklist, which it describes as the exact checklist your evaluator will use, together with instructions and timing information for each skill.

Practise each skill step by step, aloud, until you can perform it in order without notes. If you do fail a skill, the score report shows which steps you missed, so you can work on exactly those before the retake.

CNA books: which CNA study book to use

Neither NCSBN nor the test vendors on the pages checked require a specific CNA study book. The textbook your state-approved program uses is the natural choice, because its chapters follow the federally required curriculum: communication, infection control, safety and emergency procedures, residents’ independence and rights, basic nursing skills, personal care, mental health and social needs, care of cognitively impaired residents and restorative services.

If you work for a nursing facility or have a job offer from one when you start training, you may not be charged for the program’s textbooks or required materials. When you choose other CNA books, check them against the content outline and your state’s skills list rather than the cover.

Using practice tests alongside your CNA test study guide

Reading builds knowledge; questions show whether you can apply it. Prometric’s paid practice exams give immediate feedback and include source material and textbook references for each version, so a wrong answer leads you back to the right chapter of your CNA test study guide.

CNA practice questions with explanations

Certsqill’s CNA practice questions are expert-developed and organised by the NNAAP content areas. Each one explains every answer option, and your readiness score per content area shows which chapters of your study guide still need work.
