HESI A2 exam registration step by step

Your school gives you the starting point: a registration link, access code or department ID. The steps below are an example from East Carolina University’s published tutorial for remote testing; your school’s IDs and versions will differ.

• Create or sign in to your Elsevier Evolve student account.
• Register for HESI Student Access and enter your school’s department ID.
• Choose the right version: at ECU, A2 V-1 for a first attempt and A2 V-2 for a retake.
• Wait for an email with your eligibility details (ECU: 1 to 3 business days).
• Schedule and pay on Prometric’s site.

Scheduling with Prometric: HESI exam register and test day

Prometric delivers the HESI A2 and the A2CT at Prometric test centers and by remote proctoring; other HESI exam types must be taken at a test center. To complete your HESI exam register step with Prometric you need your eligibility number. You can schedule online, or by phone at 1-800-481-6457 between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. ET, Monday to Friday.

For remote testing you need a computer with a camera, microphone and internet connection, and a device compatibility check before you book. One 8.5 by 11 whiteboard is allowed, and the exam timer keeps running during breaks and the security scan that follows.

HESI exam registration fees and retakes

Elsevier does not publish a fee on the pages we checked. With Prometric, you pay on Prometric’s site during scheduling, even if the Evolve step shows $0.00, as ECU warns its applicants. Schools also set retake rules. Examples: ECU applies a three-month waiting period; Cuyahoga Community College allows two attempts a year, 30 days apart.

Get the HESI A2 exam register step right the first time: Cuyahoga Community College tells applicants not to register for multiple schools or exam versions, and ECU says a wrong version has to be reset by Elsevier.

How many questions are on the HESI A2 exam?

It depends on which sections your school selects. Elsevier does not publish the counts on the pages we checked, but two schools publish the same structure. Example, Gwinnett Technical College:

• Reading, vocabulary, grammar and math: 55 questions each
• Anatomy and physiology: 30 questions
• Critical thinking: 30 questions
• Personality profile and learning style: 15 questions each

How many questions on the HESI A2 count?

South Texas College notes that each 55-item section includes 50 scoring and 5 pilot items, and lists 30 items for anatomy and physiology and 14 for the ungraded learning style profile. So the answer to how many questions on HESI A2 sections count is smaller than the number you see on screen. When people ask how many questions are on the HESI exam overall, the honest answer is: add up the sections your school requires.

How long is the HESI A2 exam?

Again, your sections decide. School examples: Gwinnett Technical College allows 4.5 hours for nursing applicants and 3.5 hours for dental hygiene, South Texas College 4.25 hours, and Cuyahoga Community College describes a four-hour timed exam. So how long is the HESI exam for you? In these examples, all sections take up to four and a half hours; fewer sections take less.

HESI score, score range and the conversion score

For the A2, schools report and require percentages. Examples: Cuyahoga Community College requires at least 75% in math and in its English composite; South Texas College says scores are available right after the exam and stay valid for two years. Cuyahoga notes the nursing department may not see your scores for four to six weeks.

The HESI score range of 0 to 1500 and the HESI conversion score belong to Elsevier’s nursing Specialty and Exit Exams. Elsevier describes the conversion score as a calculation based on the overall HESI Score, but publishes no formula on the page we checked, so there is no official HESI conversion score calculator to point you to, and the conversion score does not apply to the A2.
