What is the PHR exam?

The PHR certification exam is the test you must pass to become a Professional in Human Resources with HRCI. You only get to it after HRCI approves your application, which checks that you have one to four years of professional-level HR experience depending on your degree.

What is the PHR exam testing? Operational HR under US federal law, across seven functional areas defined in HRCI’s exam content outline, in effect since 2024. The largest is employee and labour relations at 20%; the smallest, learning and development and HR information management, carry 10% each.

The HRCI PHR exam is computer-based and mostly multiple-choice. You can take it at a Pearson VUE test centre, or online through Pearson VUE’s OnVUE if you live in the US or Canada.

How long is the PHR exam?

You get 2 hours of testing time, plus 30 minutes of administration time — before you start, for example, you must agree to HRCI’s Exam Confidentiality Statement. Budget around two and a half hours for the appointment.

In those two hours you answer 115 questions: 90 scored and 25 pretest questions. The handbook says scored and pretest questions are randomly distributed through the exam, so you cannot identify the pretest items and every question deserves full attention. That is just over a minute per question.

PHR exam dates 2026: is there a PHR exam window?

There are no fixed PHR exam dates in 2026. HRCI’s handbook, revised October 2026, states that it offers year-round testing. What you do have is a personal PHR exam window: the eligibility period of 180 calendar days that starts on the day your application is approved. You must schedule and sit the exam inside it.

Older calendars that list HRCI PHR exam dates, or lists titled “PHR exam dates 2025”, describe a system HRCI no longer uses in its current handbook. If you see fixed testing windows quoted, check them against HRCI’s own policies before planning around them.

How to schedule the PHR exam

You schedule PHR exam appointments with Pearson VUE once HRCI has approved your application. Test centre and online appointments are first come, first served, and HRCI’s advice is plain: schedule as soon as your application is approved, and do not wait until you are near the end of your eligibility period.

Your PHR exam schedule is then up to you, within the 180 days. Online delivery is available to residents of the United States and Canada; elsewhere you choose a Pearson VUE test centre. HRCI notes that it reviews test centre locations periodically based on volume, so check availability before you apply if you need a particular city.

How long does it take to get PHR certification?

Leaving aside the years of HR experience you need to qualify, the administrative steps are short. HRCI’s handbook lists one business day to process an application that needs no extra documents or audit, and ten business days to review an audited application once all items arrive.

After that, you have up to 180 days to test. Results follow quickly: Pearson VUE notifies test centre candidates within one to two business days when official results are online, and online candidates within 24 to 48 hours. So how long does it take to get a PHR certification? From application to result, it can be a few weeks — the real variable is how long you need to prepare.

PHR exam pass rate and passing score

HRCI publishes the PHR exam pass rate because accredited certification programmes must make pass rate data public every year. The figure as of 31 December 2025 is 72%. It describes everyone who tested, not your personal chances.

The pass mark is published too. HRCI scores the exam on a scale, and its handbook states that the passing score for each exam type is set at 500, regardless of which version of the exam you take. Because 500 is a scaled score, it cannot be translated into a number of correct answers.

How hard is the PHR exam?

The only official measure of difficulty is the pass rate: 72% of candidates passed as of the end of 2025, which means more than one in four did not. HRCI publishes no difficulty rating beyond that.

What makes the PHR certification test demanding is breadth and pace. Seven functional areas, none below 10% of the exam, and just over a minute per question. Candidates who know one area deeply — recruiting or payroll, say — still face 80% or more of the exam outside it.

If you fail, the handbook sets a 90-day cooling-off period from the exam date before you may book a retake, and without HRCI’s optional Second Chance Test Insurance you pay the exam fees again.
