Java certification courses and training: what Oracle offers

Oracle Java certification course options

Oracle’s own training for its Java exams comes from Oracle University and is delivered through Oracle MyLearn. The main options are:

Each of these is a Java certification course by Oracle in the sense that matters: it is built on Oracle’s own exam objectives. Courses from other providers can be good, but check them against the same objectives.

• Become a Java SE 17 Developer — Oracle University’s learning path leading to exam 1Z0-829. It covers object-oriented programming, Java syntax and conventions, constructs and operators, core APIs such as Collections, Streams, IO and Concurrency, deployment, and the new features of JDK 17. The same page carries the notice that 1Z0-829 retires on February 28, 2027.
• Java 21 and Java 25 video classes — Dev.java notes that Oracle University offers a video class of more than 40 hours for each of the Java 21 and Java 25 exams to subscribers.
• Oracle Java Foundations — a free introductory learning path (see below).

Is there a free Java certification course?

Yes, at the introductory level. Oracle University’s Oracle Java Foundations learning path can be started for free. It covers an overview of Java, text and numbers, arrays, conditions and loops, classes and objects, exception handling, inheritance and interfaces, and Java on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and it ends with an Explorer badge.

That badge is not a certification. A free Java certification in the sense of a free exam is not something the Oracle pages we checked offer: Oracle’s certification exams are bought as exam attempts on Oracle MyLearn. The free path is a sensible start if you are new to Java; for the Professional exams you will need far more depth than it covers.

Java certification programs and subscriptions

Oracle sells training and exam attempts in a few combinations. Its buying page describes an exam subscription with one single-use exam, and learning subscriptions that include three certification exam attempts per subscription. It does not list prices on that page.

If you plan to take more than one Oracle exam, or want a safety margin for a retake, compare those Java certification programs before buying a single exam attempt. Whatever you buy, Oracle says you have six months to take an exam after buying an attempt.

Java certification classes: live or self-paced?

Oracle University’s Java preparation on the pages we checked is mainly self-paced: learning paths and video classes on Oracle MyLearn. If you prefer a fixed timetable and an instructor, Java certification classes from training providers are an alternative — but none of them is required by Oracle.

When you compare a Java certification class or a full Java certification training package, check three things:

• Exam and version: does it name the exact exam code — 1Z0-829, 1Z0-830 or 1Z0-831? Dev.java stresses that study material must match the exam you are studying for.
• Objectives: does its outline follow Oracle’s published objectives for that exam?
• Timing: for Java 17, will you finish in time to sit the exam before February 28, 2027?

Which Java certification courses fit which exam

Java certification courses are version-specific, and Oracle currently lists several Java exams. Dev.java notes that most people now start with one of the latest two — 1Z0-831 for Java 25 or 1Z0-830 for Java 21 — and that some start with the Java Foundations exam, 1Z0-811, for an easier certification faster.

For Java 17, the official route is the Become a Java SE 17 Developer learning path. Given the retirement date, choose it only if you already know the material well or your employer asks specifically for Java 17.

Does Oracle require a course before the Java exam?

The Oracle pages we checked state no required course for its Java exams. Oracle’s badge for Java SE 17 says the credential is earned by passing the required exam.
