PSM training and courses: Scrum.org’s live, online and self-paced options
Training is optional for PSM I — Scrum.org states that attendance is not a prerequisite, though a course is strongly recommended. If you do take one, Scrum.org offers two official routes to PSM I: a two-day live class taught by a Professional Scrum Trainer, and a self-paced online course. Both include an attempt at the PSM I assessment, which otherwise costs $200 USD.

Professional Scrum Master training: the live class
Scrum.org’s Professional Scrum Master training is a two-day class, taught by Professional Scrum Trainers (PSTs). Scrum.org says PSTs need several years of Scrum experience and go through interviews, knowledge validation, training and peer review before they teach. You can attend in person, in a live virtual class — which may be split into more, shorter days — or as a private class for your organisation.
The topics follow the Scrum Guide: Scrum theory and empiricism, how each part of the framework connects to those principles, the Scrum values, what “Done” means and why it matters for transparency, using the Product Backlog to plan with agility, and the Scrum Master’s role in self-managing teams, including its leadership side.

What the professional scrum master course includes
Everyone completing the professional scrum master course receives a free password for the PSM I assessment. If you attend a live instructor-led class, attempt PSM I within 14 days of receiving that password and do not reach the 85% pass mark, Scrum.org gives you a second attempt at no extra cost.
Two further benefits come with the live class. Students who pass PSM I are entitled to a 40% discount on the PSM II assessment, and the two-day course earns 14 PMI PDUs — for attending, not for passing. Scrum.org’s course page does not list a price for its professional scrum master training courses; upcoming classes are found through Scrum.org’s class search.

PSM training online: self-paced or live virtual
There are two kinds of PSM training online. The first is the live virtual class above: the same professional scrum master PSM training as in a classroom, with a trainer, delivered over video in shorter sessions.
The second is Scrum.org’s self-paced course. It costs $279 USD as a one-time payment, takes approximately 4½ hours, and includes one attempt at the PSM I certification. Scrum.org describes it as delivered fully online at your own pace, with activities, videos and quizzes, and says you can take it over days, weeks or months. The second free attempt mentioned above is tied to live instructor-led classes; the self-paced page mentions one included attempt.
Whichever PSM online training you choose, the assessment is the same: 80 questions in 60 minutes, 85% to pass.

PSM certification online without a course
You can earn the professional scrum master certification online without any class. Scrum.org sells the PSM I assessment on its own at $200 USD per attempt; the password has no expiration date but is valid for one attempt. For a disciplined self-studier, that makes the PSM certification online the cheapest route — the Scrum Guide and Scrum.org’s Scrum Open practice assessment are the core material.
The trade-off is support. A course gives you a trainer to challenge your understanding and, with the live class, a second attempt if the first goes wrong. Self-study gives you neither, so your own practice scores have to do the job of telling you when you are ready.

How to choose between PSM courses
All official PSM training courses lead to the same certification, so the choice comes down to how you learn and what is bundled. Compare PSM training classes on these points before paying:
- Is it an official Scrum.org class taught by a Professional Scrum Trainer? The free PSM I password is part of Scrum.org’s own course.
- Live or self-paced? Only the live instructor-led class includes the second attempt if you fail within 14 days.
- Do you need PMI PDUs? The two-day course earns 14 for attendance.
- Will you go on to PSM II? Passing PSM I after the live class gives you 40% off the PSM II assessment.

PSM 2 certification training: the advanced class
For the next level, Scrum.org’s PSM 2 certification training is Professional Scrum Master – Advanced (PSM-A), a two-day class in person, live virtual or private. It is intended for Scrum Masters with at least one year of experience who already understand the Scrum framework thoroughly.
The class covers the Scrum Master stances — teacher, coach and mentor, facilitator, change agent — servant leadership, working with the wider organisation and management, handling team conflict and removing impediments. It includes a free attempt at PSM II, with a second free attempt if you take the assessment within 14 days of receiving your password and do not score at least 85%.

PSM safety training and OSHA PSM training are something else
PSM also stands for process safety management. OSHA’s Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals standard, 29 CFR 1910.119, deals with managing the hazards of highly hazardous chemicals. If you are looking for PSM safety training or OSHA PSM training, you need courses on that standard; OSHA’s process safety management pages are the official starting point.
The PSM training on this page is Scrum.org’s Professional Scrum Master training for agile teams. It has nothing to do with process safety.

After the course: closing the gap to 85%
A class explains Scrum; the assessment checks whether you can apply the exact wording of the Scrum Guide at 45 seconds per question. If your course password has a 14-day window for the free second attempt, plan your practice so you can sit the assessment inside it.
Certsqill’s PSM I question bank carries expert-developed questions with an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score by focus area, with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
