How much does the real estate exam cost in total?
The exam fee is only one line. California is a good example because its DRE publishes everything in one form: $100 for the salesperson exam, $350 for the original salesperson license and $49 for fingerprints. For brokers it is $150 for the exam and $450 for the license, plus the same $49 fingerprint fee.
In New York, the Department of State lists a $65 initial application fee next to the $15 exam. Texas says its application fees are non-refundable and non-transferable and refers to a separate fee schedule. Pre-licensing courses are an additional cost charged by schools, and their prices are not set by the states.

Real estate license exam cost of retakes and rescheduling
Failing or moving your appointment costs extra. In California, a re-examination costs $100 for salespersons and $150 for brokers, and a rescheduled exam costs $40 or $45. In Connecticut a retake costs $51 for one or both portions.
Some fees cannot be recovered at all: PSI’s Washington bulletin states that examination fees are not refundable or transferable. Book only when you are ready.

What we could not confirm
Florida’s sales associate booklet does not state a dollar amount for the exam; it only notes a fee change effective 3 January. Washington’s Department of Licensing exam page lists no exam fee, so the $210 figure comes from PSI’s bulletin dated March 2024. For both states, check the current amount with the agency or provider before you pay.

Cost of practice tests
Pearson VUE sells broker and salesperson practice tests for $19.95; they contain no state-specific content. Certsqill’s real estate exam practice questions are expert-developed, explain every answer option and show a readiness score per content area, so you can avoid paying for a retake.
