There is no required course for the Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator exam — Salesforce lists the prerequisite as “None”. What it does name is a short set of official resources: a Trailmix on Trailhead, two superbadges and two Trailhead Academy courses. Do you need Salesforce admin training before the exam?
No course is mandatory. The exam guide states “Prerequisite: None”, so you can register without any Salesforce administrator training on record. What Salesforce recommends instead is experience: six or more months as a Salesforce Platform Administrator, combined with training, Trailhead and self-study.
That recommendation is the most useful filter for choosing Salesforce administrator training. If you already run an org day to day, you mostly need to close gaps against the exam outline. If you have never configured Salesforce, you need a structured path that includes hands-on work, because the questions are written as scenarios from a real org.

Free Salesforce admin training on Trailhead
Salesforce describes Trailhead as its free online learning platform, which makes it the obvious starting point for free Salesforce admin training. Trailhead Salesforce admin training is organised into modules, trails and Trailmixes, with hands-on challenges in a practice org, and Salesforce also offers free Trailhead GO mobile apps for iOS and Android.
The exam guide names one Trailmix specifically: Prepare for Your Salesforce Platform Administrator Certification. It also recommends two superbadges, Object Relationships and Flow Administration — both test exactly the kind of configuration work the scenario questions are built on.
So if you are looking for free Salesforce administrator training, you can cover the whole official self-study route without paying. Note what is not free: the salesforce admin certification itself. Free learning does not extend to the exam, which costs US$200 to register (US$100 for a retake), plus applicable taxes.

Trailhead Academy: the official Salesforce admin courses
For instructor-led Salesforce admin certification training, Salesforce runs Trailhead Academy. The exam guide names two Salesforce admin courses from it:
The two serve different readers. ADX201 is a Salesforce admin course for people new to the role; CRT101 is a Salesforce admin certification course for people who already know the platform and want to prepare for the exam itself. If you are choosing one Salesforce administrator course and you already work in an org, CRT101 is the closer fit to the exam; if you do not, start with ADX201.
The exam guide does not publish course prices or durations, so this page does not state them either — check the current schedule and price on Trailhead Academy before you book.

Salesforce admin online training vs classroom courses
Most Salesforce administrator training courses fall into two types. Self-paced Salesforce administrator training online — Trailhead, recorded lessons, reading — lets you fit study around work and repeat what you got wrong. Live classes, online or in person, give you a fixed schedule and an instructor to ask, which helps if you keep postponing study.
Salesforce administrator online training with a live instructor is usually the more expensive option; online Salesforce admin training you work through alone is cheaper but depends entirely on your discipline. Trailhead Salesforce administrator training sits in the second group and costs nothing.
Either way, judge a Salesforce admin course online the same way you would judge a classroom one: by how closely it follows the exam outline, not by its length. A Salesforce administrator training course that skips a section of the outline leaves points on the table, however many hours it runs.
How to choose a Salesforce admin certification course
Whatever Salesforce admin training course you look at, check it against the exam guide before you pay. Four questions settle most of it:
The same checks apply to any Salesforce certified administrator course, whether it calls itself a class, a programme or a series of Salesforce administrator certification courses. The exam guide is the reference; the course should map to it, not the other way round.
- Does it cover all eight weighted sections, including Agentforce (8%)? Material that leaves Agentforce out was written for an older version of the exam.
- Is it current? The exam guide states that questions align to the Summer ’25 release; Salesforce adds and renames features with every release.
- Does it include hands-on work in a Salesforce org, not just slides? Automation (15%) and Data and Analytics Management (17%) are tested as scenarios.
- Does it give extra time to the heavy sections? Data and Analytics Management is the largest at 17%, followed by three sections at 15% each.

Salesforce admin bootcamp: what to look for
A Salesforce admin bootcamp compresses preparation into a few intensive days or weeks. It can work if you already have some platform experience and need structure and pressure; it is a hard way to learn Salesforce from zero, because the six months of hands-on experience Salesforce recommends cannot be compressed into a week.
Before you sign up for a Salesforce administrator bootcamp, ask the provider directly: whether the exam fee is included or extra (the exam is US$200 on its own), whether the content follows the current exam guide including Agentforce, how much of the time is spent configuring a live org, and what happens if you do not pass. None of these is set by Salesforce, so the answers vary from one bootcamp to the next.

Is there a Salesforce admin practice exam free from Salesforce?
Salesforce links an official Platform Administrator Practice Test from its own blog. It is un-proctored, you can take it from your own computer with or without a time limit, and on submission it shows your score by section together with feedback on why each answer is correct or incorrect. The page does not mention a fee — it is the closest thing to an official free Salesforce admin practice exam.
Use it once early, to see the question style, and once later, to check progress. One short test is a sample, not a readiness measure: it cannot tell you reliably how you would do across all eight sections.
