Series 63 study guide: official outline, materials and study plan

The official Series 63 exam study guide is NASAA’s own PDF: it sets out the eight tested areas with their weights and the laws eligible for testing, but it contains no practice questions. Use it as the map, add one set of study materials that follows it closely, and judge your readiness with timed practice rather than a fixed number of hours.

The official Series 63 study guide PDF

NASAA publishes a Series 63 study guide PDF dated September 1, 2023, linked from its Exam Study Guides page. It is the only Series 63 study guide that comes from the organization that writes the exam, and it is publicly available on nasaa.org.

The guide describes each of the eight sections in prose and names the laws behind them. The core is the Uniform Securities Act of 1956 as amended by NASAA: NASAA states that the entire text of this model act, including its updates and commentary, is eligible for testing, while the 2002 version of the Act is not tested. That one sentence tells you which version of the law your other materials must follow.

How to study for Series 63 by topic weight

The weights in the guide are the best guide to where your hours should go. Two areas carry almost half of the 60 scored questions, so study for Series 63 in this order of priority:

  • Ethical Practices and Obligations: 25% (15 questions)
  • Communication with Customers and Prospects: 20% (12 questions)
  • Regulation of Broker-Dealer Agents: 13% (8 questions)
  • Regulation of Broker-Dealers: 12% (7 questions)
  • Remedies and Administrative Provisions: 11% (7 questions)
  • Regulation of Securities and Issuers: 9% (5 questions)
  • Regulation of Investment Advisers and of Investment Adviser Representatives: 5% each (3 questions each)

Series 63 exam study materials: what to look for

NASAA says candidates are responsible for their own course of study, keeps a list of study material vendors on its site and notes that it does not endorse any of them. So there is no official answer to which are the best Series 63 study materials. Judge any Series 63 study material against three checks:

  • It follows the current test specifications, which took effect on June 12, 2023, and the eight sections in NASAA’s guide.
  • It teaches the Uniform Securities Act of 1956 as amended by NASAA, not the 2002 version.
  • It includes timed practice with explanations, because the guide itself has no questions.

Series 63 books and flashcards

Series 63 books are useful for the first pass through the material, especially for the terms behind each section of the outline: broker-dealer, agent, investment adviser, investment adviser representative, securities and issuers. Check the edition date against NASAA’s June 2023 specifications before you buy.

Series 63 flashcards suit exactly those terms, plus the remedies and administrative provisions section. Make your own cards from questions you miss; they target your gaps better than a generic deck.

How long to study for Series 63

NASAA and FINRA do not publish a recommended Series 63 study time, so any fixed figure for how many hours to study for Series 63 is somebody’s estimate, not an official number. How long does it take to study for Series 63 in your case depends on how much of the outline is new to you.

A better approach than counting hours: read NASAA’s guide once, work through each section, then take timed sets of 65 questions in 75 minutes. When you consistently clear the passing line of 43 out of 60 and no section stays weak, you have studied long enough.

Keep your Series 63 study current

Exam content changes. NASAA updated questions on the Series 63, 65 and 66 to reflect the SEC’s Investment Adviser Marketing Rule, and it has announced further updates for early 2027 after model rule amendments adopted in May 2026, with the exact date still to be announced.

If your test date falls near that change, check NASAA’s Exams page before your appointment.

Check your readiness with practice questions

Reading is not the same as answering under time pressure. Certsqill’s Series 63 question bank has expert-developed questions mapped to NASAA’s eight areas, an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per area, so you can see which part of your Series 63 study still needs work.
