What is the SSAT test?
What is SSAT test? The SSAT, the Secondary School Admission Test, is an admission test for private and independent schools, offered since 1957. It assesses students in grades 3 to 11 on verbal, math and reading skills, and adds a writing sample that is not scored but goes to the schools.
The SSAT exam has three levels by current grade: Elementary for grades 3 and 4, Middle for grades 5 to 7 and Upper for grades 8 to 11. The candidate agreement is with E3n, the nonprofit that runs the SSAT site Admission.org.

SSAT format: Middle and Upper Level
Middle and Upper Level have the same structure and take 3 hours 10 minutes, with two ten-minute breaks. The SSAT describes the test as virtually unspeeded.
- Writing sample: 25 minutes, choice of a personal or general prompt, not scored
- Quantitative (math): 50 questions in two 30-minute sections of 25
- Reading comprehension: 40 questions in 40 minutes
- Verbal: 60 questions in 30 minutes, 30 synonyms and 30 analogies
- Experimental: 16 questions in 15 minutes, not scored

SSAT format: Elementary Level
The Elementary Level takes 2 hours 5 minutes with one 15-minute break and is offered on paper only. Quantitative has 30 questions in 30 minutes, verbal 30 in 20 minutes and reading 28 in 30 minutes. The 15-minute writing sample and a 15-minute experimental section are not scored.

SSAT test questions by section
The scored SSAT questions fall into three areas. In verbal, half the questions are synonyms and half are analogies, so SSAT verbal practice means both vocabulary and relationships between words. Analogies are a question type many students have never seen at school, which makes SSAT analogies practice worth starting early. In reading, passages are followed by questions.
SSAT math questions make up two separate 25-question sections at Middle and Upper Level. The SSAT does not publish a topic-by-topic list on the pages we checked, so use the official practice tests to see the range of SSAT math topics at your level. An official SSAT math practice test is part of every full-length practice test in the Guide Book and Online Practice.

How much does the SSAT cost?
The SSAT price depends on level, format and location. In the United States and Canada, the Middle or Upper Level SSAT costs $172 on paper (Standard or school Flex), $242 at a Prometric test center, $258 for SSAT at Home and $272 for Flex with an educational consultant. The Elementary Level costs $112. Internationally, Middle and Upper cost $329 and Elementary $229.
Late registration for the Standard paper test adds $59 and rush registration $100. Fee waivers are available for qualified test takers.

ISEE vs SSAT test
Both are private school admission tests with verbal, math and reading sections and an unscored essay. The SSAT verbal section uses synonyms and analogies, while the ISEE uses synonyms and sentence completions. SSAT levels follow the grade a student is in now; ISEE levels follow the grade they are applying to.
Scoring differs too: at Middle and Upper Level the SSAT subtracts a quarter point for each wrong answer, while the ISEE does not deduct for wrong answers. Choose by what your schools accept; if they accept both, a practice test of each shows which suits your child.

Official SSAT practice tests and prep materials
The official SSAT prep materials come in two products that can be bought together. The SSAT Guide Book ($70) contains four full-length Middle and Upper Level practice tests, 600 questions in total. Online Practice ($80, valid for a year) has the same four full-length tests plus over 1,000 more questions, 15 practice section tests and more than 50 subject quizzes. The bundle costs $130, and Online Practice is free with a fee waiver.
So the official SSAT upper level practice test and the SSAT middle level practice test are the full-length tests in the Guide Book and Online Practice. They are also the closest thing to an official SSAT practice exam or SSAT mock test, because they match the real section order and timing.

SSAT online practice test and practice questions online
Online Practice is the official SSAT online practice test product and the main source of SSAT practice questions online, with section tests and subject quizzes on top of the full-length tests. It is the official route for SSAT test prep online.
For SSAT upper level practice questions or Middle Level questions on one topic, the subject quizzes are the most targeted part. Use full-length tests to practise the 3 hours 10 minutes of timing.

Free SSAT practice tests and sample tests
The free SSAT practice tests from the test maker are limited. For Middle and Upper Level there is a free online Mini-Practice Test: 30 questions with an instant report of your child’s ten highest and lowest-scoring topics. It works as an SSAT free sample test and a quick SSAT test example before you buy anything.
For the Elementary Level, free study guides are available as a PDF. These are the only free SSAT sample questions and SSAT example questions the official practice page lists.

SSAT practice test PDF
If you want an SSAT practice test PDF, note what the official practice page offers: a free PDF only for the Elementary Level. An SSAT upper level practice test PDF or a middle level SSAT practice test PDF is not listed as a free download; the full-length Middle and Upper tests come in the Guide Book and Online Practice.
A middle level SSAT practice test PDF from an unofficial source may not match the current timing of 3 hours 10 minutes and four scored question areas. Check every practice test against the official format before you rely on its score.

SSAT books, study guide, courses and flashcards
The official SSAT prep book is the SSAT Guide Book, which also serves as an SSAT study guide with full-length tests. Other SSAT books and SSAT prep books come from independent publishers; compare them with the official section counts and timing before buying.
An SSAT prep course is offered by independent providers, not by the SSAT itself. The official practice page lists no SSAT vocabulary flashcards, so any flashcards you use are self-made or from another source. For SSAT analogy practice, write each word pair as a sentence that states the relationship. Since verbal is 60 questions of synonyms and analogies, vocabulary work pays off whatever SSAT prep resources you choose.

SSAT practice questions
Certsqill’s SSAT practice questions are expert-developed and organized by the scored areas: verbal synonyms and analogies, quantitative, and reading comprehension. Regular SSAT practice and SSAT math practice like this belong in any SSAT prep plan alongside the official practice tests.
Every question comes with an explanation for each answer option, and your results build a readiness score per section, so you can see whether verbal, math or reading needs more work before test day. A 7-day money-back guarantee applies.
