USMLE Step 2 CK study guide: study plan, resources and books

The most reliable USMLE Step 2 CK study guide is the official content outline: medicine makes up 55–65% of the exam, pediatrics 17–27%, obstetrics and gynecology 10–20% and psychiatry 10–15%, and diagnosis is the most tested physician task. Build your study plan on those weights, use the free USMLE samples and NBME self-assessments to check progress, and choose books that follow the same outline.

USMLE Step 2 CK study plan

USMLE and NBME do not publish a USMLE Step 2 study plan or a recommended number of weeks. The USMLE Step 2 CK study plan below is our own method, built around the official weights; set the length of each phase to the time you have, for example after your clinical rotations.

  • Baseline: one NBME self-assessment or a block of official sample questions to see where you stand.
  • Review by discipline, starting with medicine, then pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry and surgery, always asking what you would do next for the patient.
  • Mixed, timed practice in 30-minute blocks of up to 20 questions, as on the real exam.
  • Checkpoints: repeat self-assessments and move study time to the weakest content areas.
  • Final phase: full-length practice under exam conditions for the 9-hour day, with review of every missed question.
