Official ACT prep courses

ACT’s test prep page groups its paid options by how you like to learn. The classes, self-paced courses, virtual tutoring and crash courses are delivered with ACT’s prep partner, and ACT presents all of them as official ACT prep options.

  • Live online classes, led by teachers who scored in the 99th percentile
  • Self-paced courses: short tutorials you work through on your own schedule
  • Virtual tutoring: one-to-one help with content, strategy and real-time guidance
  • Last-minute prep: crash courses on the topics you need most when the test is close
  • In-person tutoring through ACT’s tutor finder

ACT test prep classes: try one free first

Before you pay for ACT test prep classes, ACT lets you join a free online sample class led by an ACT teacher. That shows you the teaching style and the pace, which matters more than the label on the course.

ACT’s prep page shows no course prices, so compare the current price on the booking page against what you need: a full course if every section is weak, tutoring or a crash course if only one section holds you back.

Free ACT prep course access with a fee waiver

Students who register for the ACT with a fee waiver automatically receive free access to The Official ACT Self-Paced Course. ACT also notes that families with a 529 Qualified Tuition Program may be able to use those funds for test prep, subject to the plan administrator.

What a good ACT preparation course should cover

Any ACT preparation course should follow the structure of the test you will actually sit: English (50 questions in 35 minutes), math (45 in 50), reading (36 in 40), and science (40 in 40) or writing (one essay in 40) only if you plan to add them.

Check that the course includes full timed practice tests, not just lessons. Pacing is what most courses cannot teach you in a lecture, and English, at 35 minutes for 50 questions, is where it bites first.

Watch out for test prep scams

ACT states that it does not use email, postal or telephone campaigns to sell third-party test prep. If someone calls or writes offering an official ACT course, check the offer on act.org before you pay.

Practice between classes

A course explains the test; practice shows whether you are ready. Certsqill’s ACT question bank has expert-developed questions, an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per section, so you can see between classes which section still needs work.
