CCRN study guide: materials, books and how to study

The best CCRN study guide starts with AACN’s own test plan, because it tells you exactly how the 125 scored questions are spread: 80% clinical judgment, 20% professional caring and ethical practice, with cardiovascular (13%) the largest single body system. Build your study around that, add one solid review book and finish with timed practice questions.

Official CCRN study materials from AACN

AACN publishes the core CCRN study materials itself, and the most important one is free: the CCRN Exam Handbook. It contains the test plan with the testable nursing actions for each body system, sample questions with answers, and the bibliography of references AACN uses to validate exam items.

AACN also sells online practice exams with randomized questions, correct-answer rationales and exam scores: a one-time free trial (7 days, 30 questions), Basic (30 days, 150 questions, $35 members / $45 nonmembers) and Premium (180 days, content-area exams, $75 / $90).

What a good CCRN exam study guide must cover

Any CCRN exam study guide you use should map cleanly to the current Adult test plan, which applies to exams taken on or after 12 November 2025. If a guide was written before that date, check it against the handbook. The weights are:

  • Cardiovascular — 13%
  • Respiratory — 12%
  • Endocrine, hematology/immunology, gastrointestinal, renal/genitourinary, integumentary — 21%
  • Musculoskeletal, neurological, behavioral/psychosocial — 18%
  • Multisystem — 16%
  • Professional caring and ethical practice — 20%, from advocacy and caring practices to clinical inquiry and systems thinking

Choosing a CCRN review book

AACN states that it does not approve, endorse or require any specific exam preparation products, so no CCRN book is official in that sense. When you compare a CCRN review book or CCRN study book, check three things: that its chapters follow the current test plan, that its practice questions explain why each wrong option is wrong, and that its references overlap with the bibliography in AACN’s handbook.

One CCRN book plus the handbook is usually enough material. Adding more books tends to repeat content rather than close gaps; practice questions show you where the real gaps are.

How to study for CCRN

How to study for CCRN efficiently: study for CCRN by test plan weight, not by textbook order. Begin each body system with the testable nursing actions in the handbook, review the physiology and priority interventions behind them, then answer questions on that system before you move on.

Do not leave professional caring and ethical practice to the end. At 20% it is worth more than any single body system, and its questions are scenario-based: what you would do, in what order, and why.

A CCRN study plan in four phases

This CCRN study plan is our suggestion, not an AACN requirement. AACN recommends that you be ready to test before you apply, because your testing window (normally 90 days, currently 180) starts with approval, so complete most of the plan before you submit the application.

  • Phase 1, baseline: read the test plan, then answer a mixed set of questions to find your weakest areas.
  • Phase 2, high-weight systems: cardiovascular, respiratory and multisystem, with questions after each topic.
  • Phase 3, remaining systems and professional caring and ethical practice, again with questions after each topic.
  • Phase 4, exam conditions: full-length timed sets of 150 questions in 3 hours, reviewing every explanation.

Practice questions as part of your study

Reading builds knowledge; questions show whether you can apply it at exam pace. Certsqill’s CCRN question bank has expert-developed questions mapped to AACN’s test plan, an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per test plan area, so you know which part of your study guide to go back to.
