CEH salary and jobs: what the Certified Ethical Hacker credential is worth

Most people searching for a CEH salary want to know one thing: will the certification pay for itself? EC-Council publishes no salary survey of CEH holders, so this page does not put a number on it. What can be checked is which jobs EC-Council maps CEH to, what the credential requires, and what it costs to keep.

Is there an official certified ethical hacker salary?

No. EC-Council does not publish salary data collected from its own certified members. Its CEH page cites an outside estimate of what ethical hackers in the United States earn, but that figure describes a job title, not people who hold the certification, and it is not EC-Council’s own data.

That matters for every variant of the question. A CEH average salary, a CEH certification salary or a salary for certified ethical hacker roles quoted on another site is that site’s estimate, usually built from job ads or self-reported pay. Pay for the same title differs by country, sector, seniority and the rest of your experience, and no public source isolates what the CEH itself adds.

The honest way to read any CEH job salary figure is therefore as a range for the role, not as a promise attached to the certificate. When you compare CEH jobs, salary differs far more by role and seniority than by which certificates the holder lists.

Certified ethical hacker jobs: which roles CEH maps to

EC-Council maps CEH to a list of security job roles. Among the titles it names on its CEH page are:

If you are searching for jobs for CEH certified professionals, search for those titles as well as for the credential itself.

EC-Council also states that CEH is approved by the US Department of Defense under Directive 8140. For anyone aiming at US defence work or its contractors, that approval is one of the most concrete reasons CEH certified jobs list the credential by name.

Certified ethical hacker job description

The work behind most certified ethical hacker jobs is the one the certification is named after: attacking systems with the owner’s permission, the way a real attacker would, and reporting what you found so it can be fixed.

In practice a job description for certified ethical hacker (CEH) jobs usually combines three parts. Reconnaissance and testing — scanning networks and applications, finding weaknesses and trying to exploit them within an agreed scope. Analysis — judging how serious each finding is. Reporting — writing it up so that system owners can act on it. SOC and analyst roles turn the same knowledge around and use it to detect and respond to attacks.

CEH certified ethical hacker jobs differ mainly in which side of that work dominates: offensive testing in penetration testing and red team roles, monitoring and response in SOC roles.

Entry level certified ethical hacker jobs

CEH is not an entry-level certification by its rules. EC-Council requires either official EC-Council training or two years of work experience in an information security role before you may sit the exam, and the experience route also means a non-refundable $100 eligibility application.

So for entry level certified ethical hacker jobs, the realistic route is the training route: official training removes the experience requirement. The CEH practical exam, which turns the credential into CEH Master, is one way to show practical skill on top of the knowledge exam.

Is the CEH worth it?

Whether CEH is worth it depends on what you need it for, and there are three questions to answer for yourself.

Does the job you want ask for it? Read the job ads for the roles above. If they name CEH — for example because of the DoD 8140 approval — the certification is worth more to you than any average figure suggests.

Can you meet the entry rules? Two years of documented security work or official training, then a four-hour knowledge exam of 125 multiple-choice questions with a cut score EC-Council sets between 60% and 85% depending on the exam form.

Are you ready for the running cost? EC-Council certifications run on a three-year cycle: you earn 120 continuing education credits per certification within three years and pay an annual continuing education fee of USD $80 if you hold at least one certification under that scheme.

Is certified ethical hacker worth it if you already work in IT?

Certifications do not replace experience; they make it easier to show. If you already do penetration testing, CEH mostly helps where a certificate is a formal requirement. If you are moving into security from IT, the structured syllabus and the practical exam give you a defined target to work towards.

Either way, the useful test before paying is the same: work through practice questions across every CEH domain and see where you stand. On Certsqill every question is expert-developed, explains each answer option, and feeds a readiness score per domain — and there is a 7-day money-back guarantee if it is not what you need.

CEH salary & career value: questions people ask

What is the average CEH salary?

EC-Council publishes no salary survey of CEH holders. Figures elsewhere are estimates for job titles such as penetration tester, not for the certification itself, and they vary by country, sector and experience.

Do certified ethical hacker jobs salary ranges depend on the certificate?

Mostly on the role. A SOC analyst and a red team specialist can both hold CEH and be paid very differently; no public source separates what the certificate itself adds.

What jobs can I get with a CEH?

EC-Council names roles including penetration tester, ethical hacker, SOC security analyst, network security engineer, red team specialist and cybersecurity analyst levels 1 to 3. Checked 9 October 2026.

Is the CEH certification worth it?

It is most valuable where employers ask for it by name, for example roles that follow the US DoD 8140 directive, which EC-Council says CEH is approved under. Weigh that against the entry rules, the exam and the annual continuing education fee.

Is CEH certification worth it for a career change into security?

It can give you a defined syllabus and a recognised credential, but EC-Council requires two years of security experience or official training first. For a career changer, that means budgeting for official training on top of the exam.

Can I get a CEH job with no experience?

You can sit CEH without two years of security experience only through official EC-Council training. The certification alone is rarely enough for a first security job; hands-on evidence, such as the CEH practical exam, helps.

Does CEH need to be renewed?

Yes. EC-Council certifications are valid for three years; you keep them with 120 continuing education credits per three-year cycle and an annual fee of USD $80. Source: EC-Council, checked 9 October 2026.
