CFE certification requirements: how to become a Certified Fraud Examiner

To sit the CFE exam you must be an ACFE Associate Member with at least 40 eligibility points — a bachelor’s degree alone gives you 40. To be certified you need 50 points, two years of professional experience in a fraud-related field, a passed exam and agreement to the ACFE Code of Professional Ethics.

How to become a Certified Fraud Examiner, step by step

ACFE’s route has a fixed order. Membership comes first, because only ACFE members can earn the CFE credential. Then you check your eligibility points, apply, pass the three exam sections within your 60-day window, and finally meet the remaining certification requirements. ACFE notifies you by email when you meet all the qualifications.

  • Join the ACFE as an Associate Member
  • Check that you have at least 40 eligibility points
  • Apply with your work experience, proof of education and professional recommendations
  • Pay the US$480 exam fee and pass all three sections with at least 75% each
  • Reach 50 points and two years of fraud-related experience to be certified

CFE certification requirements: the points system

Eligibility runs on points. ACFE requires a minimum of 40 points to take the exam and a minimum of 50 points to be certified. A bachelor’s degree or equivalent is worth 40 points, which is why many applicants qualify to sit the exam on their degree alone.

Without a degree, each complete year of academic study counts, with one academic year defined as 24 completed credit or semester hours. ACFE also lets you substitute two years of fraud-related professional experience for each year of study. Points claimed for education must come from an accredited institution of higher learning.

Professional certifications can help too: ACFE states that certain approved certifications and credentials are equivalent to 10 academic points, and its approved list includes CPA and CIA. ACFE’s online point calculator lets you total your own score.

Certified fraud examiner requirements beyond the exam

Passing the exam does not make you a CFE by itself. To be certified you must also have at least two years of professional experience in a field related to the detection or deterrence of fraud. ACFE notes that you need this experience by the time you are certified, not to sit for the exam.

ACFE’s Board of Regents has approved these experience categories: accounting and auditing; compliance and ethics; corporate security and loss prevention; fraud investigation; fraud prevention and fraud risk management; fraud-related legal services, litigation support and consulting; proactive fraud detection; and teaching, writing or researching on fraud-related topics. Work outside these labels can still count if the job involves preventing, detecting or investigating fraud.

Finally, you must agree to abide by the ACFE’s bylaws and Code of Professional Ethics, both to be a member and to hold the credential.

CFE exam requirements on the day

The exam has its own rules. Once eligibility is activated you have 60 days to complete all three sections, each in one sitting. Check-in requires proof of identification and security checks, and the exam is closed book with no outside help.

You can test online through Prometric’s ProProctor platform, at a Prometric testing centre, or on paper at an in-person ACFE review course. The exam is offered only in English.

How to get a CFE certification faster

If you already hold a bachelor’s degree and two years of fraud-related experience, the requirements are met as soon as you join and pass; the exam is then the only real gate. If you are still building experience, you can sit and pass the exam first and be certified once you reach the two years.

Without a degree, count your academic years and professional certifications in ACFE’s calculator before you apply, so you know whether you are at 40 points or need more experience first.
