CKA training and courses: what the Linux Foundation offers

You do not need a course to sit the CKA — the exam has no prerequisites. But because it is a hands-on test in live clusters, the right Kubernetes certification training saves time. Here is what the Linux Foundation offers, what each option costs, and how to judge any other course.

Is CKA training required?

No. The Linux Foundation states that there are no prerequisites for the CKA exam, and its sample curriculum path notes that its courses are “NOT required or prerequisites” to take it. CKA training is a choice you make for preparation, not a box to tick.

What a course should give you is hands-on practice against the five official domains, with troubleshooting at 30% as the largest share.

Self-paced: Kubernetes Fundamentals (LFS258)

The Linux Foundation’s self-paced CKA course is Kubernetes Fundamentals (LFS258). It is an online course with 35 hours of course material, hands-on labs and assignments in a hosted, in-browser environment, and 12 months of access. The Linux Foundation says it provides “the skills and knowledge also tested” by the CKA exam.

On its own the course costs $299. With the exam, the Linux Foundation lists a bundle of $645, and a THRIVE-ONE annual subscription bundle with the exam at $625.

Before starting, the Linux Foundation expects familiarity with Linux concepts and the command line, package managers, and Git, and it recommends its free introductory Linux and Kubernetes courses first.

Instructor-led: Kubernetes Administration (LFS458)

For live certified Kubernetes administrator training, the Linux Foundation runs Kubernetes Administration (LFS458): four days of instructor-led class time, offered as a virtual class or in a classroom, for $3495. The price includes a CKA exam registration with 12 months to schedule and one retake.

The Linux Foundation expects students to understand Linux administration and be comfortable on the command line. A live class suits you if you learn better with a fixed schedule and an instructor to ask; the self-paced course covers the same exam for far less money if you do not need that.

Free courses to start with

The Linux Foundation’s sample path for the CKA starts with free courses, including Introduction to Kubernetes (LFS158), before moving to LFS258 or LFS458. If Kubernetes is new to you, a free introduction tells you whether you are ready for an intermediate course before you pay for one.

What to look for in any Kubernetes certification course

Whichever provider you choose, the same checks separate a useful Kubernetes certification course from a video series:

  • Hands-on labs in real clusters, because the exam is performance-based and scored on the result.
  • Coverage of all five domains, weighted like the exam — troubleshooting 30%, cluster architecture and installation 25%, services and networking 20%, workloads and scheduling 15%, storage 10%.
  • The current Kubernetes version: the exam is based on v1.35, so material for older releases can miss what is tested now.
  • Practice with the documentation the exam allows, instead of external search.
  • Timed practice: 15–20 tasks in 2 hours.

CKA certification training and the simulator

Every exam registration includes two simulator sessions, each with 36 hours of access and 17 questions. Whatever CKA certification training you choose, plan the simulator into it: one session after the course to find your weak domains, one in the final week as a timed rehearsal.

Practice questions alongside a course

Certsqill does not sell a CKA course. Its CKA question bank covers the knowledge behind the tasks, with an explanation for every option — a complement to hands-on work, not a replacement.
