What is the CKA certification?

CKA stands for Certified Kubernetes Administrator. The Linux Foundation states that the CKA was created by the Linux Foundation and the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), and it is the administrator credential in the Kubernetes certification family: installing and configuring clusters, running workloads, wiring up networking and storage, and fixing things when they break.

It sits next to two siblings. CKAD (Certified Kubernetes Application Developer) covers the same platform from the application side, and CKS (Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist) is the security specialisation that can only be attempted after passing CKA. That makes CKA the gateway credential if security is where you want to end up.

What sets CKA apart from most IT certifications is the exam itself: there are no answer options to choose from. You are given live clusters and a terminal, and you are scored on whether the cluster ends up in the state the task asked for.

How much does the CKA certification cost?

The Linux Foundation lists the CKA exam at $445 for the exam only. Two bundles are offered on the same page: the exam with a THRIVE-ONE annual subscription for $625, and the exam with the Kubernetes Fundamentals course (LFS258) for $645.

The registration includes more than one sitting. The Linux Foundation lists 12-month exam eligibility, one retake and two simulator sessions as part of the purchase, so the $445 covers a first attempt, a second attempt if you need it, and two practice runs in an exam-like environment.

For renewal, the Linux Foundation names one route: retake and pass the exam before the certification expires. It does not list a separate, cheaper renewal product, so if you need to stay current, budget for an exam registration every two years.

What is the CKA exam format?

The CKA is an online, proctored, performance-based test. The Linux Foundation’s instructions state that the exam consists of 15–20 performance-based tasks, each to be completed on a designated host, and candidates have 2 hours to complete them.

The exam is taken remotely on PSI’s proctoring platform “Bridge”, with audio, video and screen sharing streamed to a proctor. You use your own computer. The exam environment currently runs Kubernetes v1.35, and the Linux Foundation states that it follows new Kubernetes minor releases within roughly 4 to 8 weeks.

During the exam you may use the Kubernetes documentation (kubernetes.io/docs), the Kubernetes blog, the Helm documentation and, for CKA only, the Gateway API documentation. Search inside those sites is allowed, but you must not open external search results. In practice that means you need to know where things live in the docs — there is not enough time to read them from scratch.

CKA passing score

The Linux Foundation states that a score of 66% or above must be earned to pass the CKA. A score report is emailed within 24 hours of finishing the exam.

Because the exam is task-based, 66% is not a share of multiple-choice answers — it is the weighted share of task outcomes the grader finds correct. A half-finished task can cost you its whole value, so speed and accuracy on the command line matter as much as knowing the concept.

The practical consequence for preparation: aim to be comfortably above the line on every domain rather than perfect on a few, and rehearse under the 2-hour limit. With 15–20 tasks, you have on average six to eight minutes per task.

What is on the CKA exam?

The Linux Foundation publishes five domains with fixed weightings. Troubleshooting is the single largest block at 30%, which is why debugging broken clusters, nodes, networking and workloads deserves more practice time than anything else.

The exam is currently based on Kubernetes v1.35, and the Linux Foundation states that the environment follows new minor releases within roughly 4 to 8 weeks. Check the curriculum on the Linux Foundation’s CKA page shortly before your exam date; material written for an older Kubernetes version can miss what is tested now.

  • Troubleshooting — 30%
  • Cluster Architecture, Installation & Configuration — 25%
  • Services & Networking — 20%
  • Workloads & Scheduling — 15%
  • Storage — 10%

CKA prerequisites

There are none. The Linux Foundation states: “There are no pre-requisites for this exam.” No prior certification, degree or documented experience is required to register.

The Linux Foundation labels the experience level as intermediate. Since every task is done in a Linux terminal, comfort with the shell, a text editor and kubectl is the realistic entry ticket, even though it is not a formal requirement.

Source: Linux Foundation — CKA certification page. Checked 8 October 2026.

How long is the CKA certification valid?

CKA certifications are valid for 2 years. CKA certifications achieved before 1 April 2024 keep their original validity of 3 years.

To renew, you retake and pass the exam before the expiration date; the renewed certification then stays current for a further 2 years from the date you pass.

One shortcut exists for people heading to the security track: the Linux Foundation states that earning or recertifying the CKS on or after 18 June 2026 automatically extends your CKA, with the CKA expiration date updated to align with the new CKS expiration date.

CKA study materials and training

The official training from the Linux Foundation is Kubernetes Fundamentals (LFS258), sold on its own or bundled with the exam for $645. The Linux Foundation also offers a THRIVE-ONE subscription bundle at $625.

The exam registration includes two simulator sessions, each with 36 hours of access and a different set of 17 questions, with graded results. Use one early to find your weak domains and keep the second for the final week.

The most important study material is free: the Kubernetes documentation itself, because it is the one reference you are allowed to open during the exam. Practising with the docs open, rather than from memory alone, matches the real exam conditions.

CKA vs CKAD vs CKS

CKA and CKAD share the same price ($445), duration (2 hours), passing score (66%) and hands-on format, but they test different jobs. CKA weights troubleshooting at 30% and cluster architecture and installation at 25%; CKAD focuses on application design, deployment, observability and configuration.

CKS is not a parallel choice but the next step: the Linux Foundation requires CKS candidates to have taken and passed the CKA exam, and the CKS passing score is 67%. If security is your goal, CKA comes first either way.

Neither CKA nor CKAD is a prerequisite for the other, so pick the one matching your daily work — operating clusters points to CKA, building and shipping applications onto them points to CKAD.

CKA practice questions

Certsqill’s CKA practice questions explain each option and are weighted the way the Linux Foundation weights the exam — with troubleshooting as the largest share.

Be clear about what knowledge questions can and cannot do for this exam. The CKA is scored on tasks you perform in a live cluster, so no set of questions replaces hands-on practice at the command line. What questions add is the layer underneath: checking that you understand why a Service does not route, which object controls scheduling, or what an etcd backup actually contains, before you spend lab time on it.

Where the CKA sits on the Kubernetes certification path

The CNCF currently counts five Kubernetes certifications: KCNA, KCSA, CKAD, CKA and CKS. Anyone who passes all five receives the CNCF’s Kubestronaut title, which is the easiest way to see the whole Kubernetes certification path in one place.

The usual order runs from knowledge to hands-on skill. KCNA (Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate) is the entry point: the Linux Foundation lists it at beginner level, as a 90-minute, online, proctored, multiple-choice exam for $250, with no prerequisites. Its own page names the CKA as the way to “go next level” and the KCSA as the security-focused alternative. The CKA and the CKAD are the two performance-based exams in the middle, and the CKS comes last, because it requires a passed CKA.

None of the steps before the CKA is mandatory — the CKA has no prerequisites — so experienced administrators often start directly with it.

Which is the best Kubernetes certification for you?

There is no single best Kubernetes certification; the right one follows your job. If you run clusters, the CKA certified Kubernetes administrator exam is the match, with troubleshooting as its largest domain. If you want a Kubernetes certification, developer side rather than operations, that is the CKAD, which tests the same platform from the application side at the same price and length. If you are new to Kubernetes, the KCNA checks the concepts before you commit to a hands-on exam.

If security is the goal, the Kubernetes certification administrator route is unavoidable: the CKS can only be taken after passing the CKA.

Linux Foundation, CNCF — and what about AWS, Azure or Docker?

The CKA is both a Linux Foundation Kubernetes certification and a Cloud Native Computing Foundation Kubernetes certification: the Linux Foundation states that the CKA was created by the Linux Foundation and the CNCF, and it runs the exam. So the CNCF Kubernetes certification for administrators and the Linux Foundation CKA exam are one and the same credential.

The Linux Foundation describes the CKA as “recognized globally, vendor-neutral”. That is the key difference from an AWS Kubernetes certification or an Azure Kubernetes certification in the sense people usually mean: a cloud provider’s credential centres on its own managed services, while the CKA tests upstream Kubernetes that runs on any of them. The Linux Foundation’s CKA page addresses exactly this question under the heading “What about AWS, Red Hat & other certs?”.

Anyone looking for a combined Docker and Kubernetes certification should know that the CKA’s five published domains are all Kubernetes administration — cluster architecture, workloads, networking, storage and troubleshooting. There is no separate container-engine domain.

Kubernetes certification cost and CKA certification finance options

The base Kubernetes certification cost for the CKA is $445 for the exam only. Beyond the two bundles on the CKA page, the Linux Foundation’s instructor-led Kubernetes Administration course (LFS458) costs $3495 and includes a free CKA exam registration with 12 months to schedule and one retake. It runs as four days of instructor-led class time, live virtual or in a classroom — the closest thing to an official CKA bootcamp.

For CKA certification finance planning, think in two-year cycles: the certification is valid for 2 years and renewed by passing the exam again, so the exam fee recurs unless you move on to the CKS, which extends the CKA automatically.

On a CKA certification coupon or voucher: the Linux Foundation’s CKA page, checked 9 October 2026, lists no coupon code. The savings it shows are the bundles. If you buy the exam elsewhere, check that the registration is issued by the Linux Foundation itself.

Source: Linux Foundation — Kubernetes Administration (LFS458). Checked 9 October 2026.

CKA exam questions, practice exams and mock exams

CKA exam questions are tasks, not answer options. That changes what a useful CKA practice exam looks like: it has to put you in front of a live cluster and a terminal under a time limit, because the exam scores the state of the cluster you leave behind.

The most exam-like CKA mock exam is the simulator included with the registration, but you can only use it twice. Between those two sessions, your own cluster is the best CKA test environment: build it, break it, and repair it while working only with the documentation the exam allows. CKA mock exams sold elsewhere are only useful if they target the current Kubernetes version.

Watch the dates. The exam is based on Kubernetes v1.35, so a set of “CKA exam questions 2025” may be written for an older version than the one you will meet. The CKA syllabus to check against is the Linux Foundation’s five-domain curriculum, with troubleshooting at 30%.

Certsqill’s CKA practice exams are expert-developed, and every question explains each answer option. They are meant for the knowledge underneath the tasks — why a Service does not route, which object controls scheduling — not as a substitute for hands-on practice.

Source: Linux Foundation — CKA certification page. Checked 9 October 2026.

CKA exam dumps

The Linux Foundation’s certification agreement explicitly prohibits “seeking and/or obtaining unauthorized access to examination materials”, naming “braindump material”, as well as publishing exam questions “with or without answers”. Sanctions it lists include cancelling your exam score, a temporary or permanent ban from Linux Foundation exams, and revoking certifications you already hold.

Beyond the rules, a CKA dump is a poor fit for this exam in practice. The CKA is scored on what you do in a live cluster, so a memorised answer does not configure a node for you. Anyone selling a CKA exam dump is selling text you cannot execute — and CKA exam dumps or CKA dumps put a certification you would otherwise keep at risk.

Source: Linux Foundation — Global Certification and Confidentiality Agreement. Checked 9 October 2026.

Is the CKA worth it?

The Linux Foundation’s CKA page publishes no certified Kubernetes administrator salary figure, and Certsqill does not quote unofficial ones. What can be weighed from official facts: there are no prerequisites, one retake and two simulator sessions are included, the certification is vendor-neutral, and it is the required step before the CKS.

Against that stand a hands-on exam that rewards real cluster practice, and a 2-year validity that means retaking the exam to stay current. Whether that is worth it depends on how much of your work actually involves operating Kubernetes.
