Best CFA Level 1 study material
The best CFA Level 1 study material is the one the exam is written from: CFA Institute’s own curriculum, delivered with practice questions, mock exams, flashcards and a study planner in the Learning Ecosystem. CFA Institute lists learning materials as included with the programme, and access runs for the whole time you are registered for an exam.
Is there a better choice? CFA Institute does not rank third-party providers and explicitly does not endorse their products. So the best study material for CFA Level 1 starts with the curriculum, and anything you add has to be checked against the current topic outlines.

CFA Level 1 prep books and study books
The CFA Level 1 study book that defines the exam is CFA Institute’s curriculum. Its Learning Ecosystem page describes the curriculum as part of the online platform and says nothing about a printed set, so check what your registration includes before buying CFA Level 1 preparation books separately.
Independent CFA Level 1 prep books summarise the same material. If you buy a CFA Level 1 prep book, make sure it matches the curriculum year of your window: from February 2027 about 25% of the Level I content changes. Older CFA Level 1 study books will miss the new Quantitative Methods and Equity content.

CFA Level 1 study hours and schedule
CFA Institute recommends 300 study hours for CFA Level 1, and warns candidates to be wary of anybody quoting fewer. How many months to study for CFA Level 1 follows from that: at 15 hours a week, about five months; at 10 hours a week, about seven.

CFA Level 1 study order
There is no official CFA Level 1 order of study, but CFA Institute’s topic outlines list the areas in this sequence: Quantitative Methods, Economics, Corporate Issuers, Financial Statement Analysis, Equity Investments, Fixed Income, Derivatives, Alternative Investments, Portfolio Management, and Ethical and Professional Standards.
Following that order works because later topics reuse earlier tools — time value of money from Quantitative Methods returns in Fixed Income and Equity. It is worth moving Ethics earlier and revisiting it often, since it carries 15–20% in 2026. Whatever study order you choose, finish every topic before your final review weeks.

Best way to study for CFA Level 1
The best way to study for CFA Level 1 is the plain one: curriculum first, practice questions immediately after each reading, review by weight, and a full timed mock exam before the day. CFA Institute’s results data supports staying on schedule — first-time candidates passed at 49% in August 2026, candidates who had deferred at 29%.

How many questions are on the CFA Level 1 exam?
The exam has 180 multiple-choice questions, split into two sessions of 90 with 135 minutes each. Each question has three answer options. So whether you ask how many questions is CFA Level 1 or how many questions in CFA Level 1 exam sessions, the answer is 180 in total and 90 per session.
The CFA Level 1 question paper is not paper: the exam is computer-based, at proctored test centres — 519 venues in August 2026.

Free CFA Level 1 practice questions and practice exams
The free CFA Level 1 practice questions that are official sit in the Learning Ecosystem, inside each topic, in the same format as the real exam. They come with your registration, so in practice the CFA Level 1 practice questions free of extra charge are CFA Institute’s own. The mock exams in the Learning Ecosystem replicate the exam’s timing and structure, which makes them the closest thing to a CFA Level 1 practice exam free of extra cost.

CFA Level 1 question examples
CFA Institute describes two question styles. One is sentence completion: a stem ends mid-sentence and the three options complete it. The other is a direct question with three answers. Its practice questions in the Learning Ecosystem are the official CFA Level 1 question examples, each with a detailed explanation of the correct answer.
Real exam items are not shared: CFA Institute’s Standard VII(A) prohibits candidates from disclosing confidential exam material, including specific details of questions. A CFA Level 1 question example presented as a leaked exam item is a breach, not a study aid.

CFA Level 1 ethics questions
Ethics is the heaviest topic in 2026 at 15–20% of the exam, falling to 10–15% from February 2027. CFA Level 1 ethics questions test the Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct, and the reference CFA Institute publishes for them is its Standards of Practice Handbook, now in its 12th edition.
Ethics CFA Level 1 questions are usually short cases: a member or candidate does something, and you decide which standard applies or whether it is violated. Work through the CFA Level 1 ethics practice questions in the Learning Ecosystem alongside the Handbook’s examples, and revisit them regularly — ethics is the topic where careful reading matters most.

CFA Level 1 syllabus PDF, study material PDF and mock exam PDF
The CFA Level 1 syllabus PDF exists officially: CFA Institute publishes the Level I Topic Outlines with all ten topic areas and their learning outcomes as a PDF on its website.
For a CFA Level 1 study material PDF or study material for CFA Level 1 PDF, the official route is different. CFA Institute delivers the curriculum through the Learning Ecosystem and does not describe a PDF edition on its platform page. Its mock exams are posted in the Learning Ecosystem too, so a CFA Level 1 mock exam PDF or mock exam CFA Level 1 PDF found elsewhere is not CFA Institute’s current mock exam.
The same caution applies to CFA Level 1 practice questions PDF with answers offered for download: material from the current curriculum belongs to CFA Institute, and files claiming to contain live exam questions breach Standard VII(A). Outdated or copied files are no substitute for the current curriculum.
