CFA Level 1 study guide: materials, study plan and practice questions

CFA Institute recommends about 300 hours of study for Level I. Your registration includes its Learning Ecosystem — the official curriculum, practice questions, mock exams, flashcards and a study planner — and the syllabus is published as ten topic areas with learning outcomes. This guide sets out how to use them.

CFA Level 1 study material

The official CFA Level 1 study material is the CFA Program curriculum, delivered through CFA Institute’s Learning Ecosystem. CFA Institute lists learning materials as included with the programme, and the Learning Ecosystem holds the full curriculum, practice questions, mock exams, flashcards, a study planner and a progress tracker, on desktop and mobile. Access lasts for as long as you are registered for an exam.

That makes the question of free CFA Level 1 study material simpler than it looks: once you have paid for registration, the core CFA Level 1 exam study material costs nothing extra. Third-party CFA Level 1 prep materials are sold separately, and CFA Institute says it does not endorse or verify them. Whatever you add, the CFA Level I study material from CFA Institute is the text the exam is written from.

CFA Level 1 syllabus

The CFA Level 1 syllabus consists of ten topic areas, each broken into learning outcomes, and CFA Institute publishes them as the Level I Topic Outlines. For 2026 the areas are Quantitative Methods, Economics, Corporate Issuers, Financial Statement Analysis, Equity Investments, Fixed Income, Derivatives, Alternative Investments, Portfolio Management, and Ethical and Professional Standards.

Use the outlines as a checklist. The weights tell you where the 180 questions are concentrated — Ethics at 15–20% in 2026, and Financial Statement Analysis, Equity and Fixed Income at 11–14% each. From February 2027, Quantitative Methods grows to 11–14% and Ethics falls to 10–15%, so make sure you study the curriculum year that matches your window.

How long to study for CFA Level 1

CFA Institute’s figure is 300 hours per level, and its prep-provider page adds a warning: be wary of anybody giving a number of less than 300 hours. So the honest answer to how many hours to study for CFA Level 1 is at least 300.

How long does it take to study CFA Level 1 in weeks depends on your weekly study time for CFA Level 1. Divide 300 hours by what you can sustain: around 15 hours a week means about 20 weeks; 10 hours a week means about 30. Your CFA Level 1 study time should end with review and mock exams, not with the last unread reading.

CFA Level 1 study plan

A CFA Level 1 study plan starts from your window and works backwards. The Learning Ecosystem includes a custom study planner and progress tracker, so a CFA Level I study plan can be built inside the official platform rather than on a separate spreadsheet.

A workable structure: cover the ten topic areas in your first block of hours, answering the practice questions at the end of each one; leave the final weeks for review and full mock exams. Ethics deserves early and repeated attention because of its weight.

  • Pick your window and count back roughly 300 hours
  • Work through each topic area, then its practice questions
  • Keep weekly review time for earlier topics
  • Finish with at least one timed mock exam

How to study for CFA Level 1

Studying for the CFA Level 1 is mostly about volume and consistency. Read a topic, answer the practice questions straight away, and note the learning outcomes you missed. CFA Institute’s practice questions give feedback with detailed explanations of the correct answer, which is where most of the learning happens.

CFA Institute’s own data shows why consistency matters: in August 2026, first-time candidates passed at 49% while candidates who had deferred at least once passed at 29%. Study for CFA Level 1 on a fixed schedule, not in bursts.

CFA Level 1 study tips

A few study tips for CFA Level 1 follow directly from how the exam works. There are three answer options and about 90 seconds per question, so practise eliminating one option quickly. Bring your approved calculator into every practice session — the TI BA II Plus or HP 12C — so the keystrokes are automatic on the day.

A short CFA Level 1 question of the day routine keeps earlier topics alive while you study new ones: one or two questions from a topic you finished weeks ago, every day, costs little time and stops knowledge from fading before the exam.

CFA Level 1 practice questions and exam sample questions

CFA Institute’s CFA Level I practice questions sit inside each topic in the Learning Ecosystem and are written in the same format as the real exam: three options, sentence completion or direct question. They are the closest thing to official CFA Level 1 exam sample questions, and the right place to start. Use your CFA Level 1 exam practice questions as a diagnostic: the topics where you miss most are where your next study hours go.

Practice in volume matters because the exam has 180 CFA Level 1 exam questions across ten areas. The optional, paid Practice Pack adds 1,000 more Level I questions and immediate access to five official mock exams, which is CFA Institute’s own CFA Level 1 question bank extension.

Answer how many questions on CFA Level 1 you can manage per sitting, then build up to 90 in a row — the length of one exam session. CFA Level 1 questions taken from the live exam, however, are off limits: CFA Institute’s Standard VII(A) prohibits candidates from disclosing confidential exam material, including specific details of questions.

CFA Level 1 mock exam

A CFA Level 1 mock exam in the Learning Ecosystem replicates the timing and structure of the real test, with the same topic weights and difficulty. CFA Institute recommends taking one before exam day. Treat it as a CFA Level 1 practice exam under real conditions: two 135-minute sessions, a break, your calculator, no notes.

Free CFA Level 1 mock exams in the official sense are the ones included with your registration; there is no extra charge for the mock exams in the Learning Ecosystem. If you want more, the Practice Pack is the paid route to five official mock exams. A free CFA Level 1 mock exam from an unknown source may not match the current weights, so check the curriculum year before trusting its score.

Best CFA Level 1 prep

CFA Institute does not rank prep providers. It runs a Prep Provider Program with best-practice principles, but states that it does not endorse, promote or warrant their products and does not verify the pass rates they publish. The best CFA Level 1 prep is therefore the one you check yourself: aligned to the current topic outlines, honest about the 300 hours, and adding practice rather than replacing the curriculum.

Whichever CFA Level 1 exam prep you choose, the official curriculum and mock exams stay the baseline of your CFA Level 1 test prep.

How to prepare for CFA Level 1

Here is the short version of CFA Level 1 exam preparation. Check the enrolment requirements and register for a window. Open the Learning Ecosystem and set up the study planner. Work through the ten topic areas with their practice questions. Review weak areas by topic weight. Take a full mock exam under timed conditions. Complete a Practical Skills Module, which CFA Institute requires before it releases your result.

That sequence is also the answer to how to prep for CFA Level 1 if you are starting from zero: the official materials define the scope, your own schedule decides the outcome.
