CFA Level 3 syllabus: what you are studying

The CFA Level 3 syllabus has five core topics plus the pathway you chose at registration. CFA Institute’s 2027 topic outlines list the learning modules — for example capital market expectations and asset allocation with real-world constraints, equity and fixed-income portfolio management, options strategies and currency management, and the Global Investment Performance Standards.

Official CFA Level 3 study materials

CFA Institute’s Learning Ecosystem is the core of your CFA Level 3 study material. It contains the full curriculum for your exam, more than 1,000 practice questions and a custom study planner, and CFA Institute lists learning materials as included with the exam. Printed curriculum volumes are a separate purchase.

The Practice Pack is an optional add-on to the Learning Ecosystem: it adds further practice questions, more official mock exams and one mock exam delivered at a Prometric centre. CFA Institute does not show its price on the Learning Ecosystem page.

Whatever other CFA Level 3 study materials you use, check that they are for your exam year and your pathway. The pathway carries up to 35% of the exam, so generic material is not enough.

CFA Level 3 sample questions

CFA Institute links a PDF of example Level III item set questions from its Level III exam page. Read at least one CFA Level 3 example question there before you plan anything else: it shows how a vignette and its four multiple-choice questions fit together.

Remember that half of the exam is essay sets. Each is built on a vignette, is worth 12 points in total and must be answered in English, and CFA Institute does not disclose the points per item. Your CFA Level 3 practice questions should therefore include written answers you check against a model answer, not only multiple-choice items.

CFA Level 3 mock exams

The Learning Ecosystem includes two official mock exams, released about 60 days before each exam window. CFA Institute recommends taking a mock exam there to practise answering exam questions. Treat each CFA Level 3 mock exam as a dress rehearsal: two sessions of 2 hours 12 minutes, 11 item sets and 11 essay sets, under real timing.

Plan your study so that you have finished the curriculum before the mocks appear. A CFA Level 3 mock test taken in the last two months tells you what to revise; taken before you have covered your pathway, it mainly tells you what you have not studied yet. If you want more CFA Level 3 mock exams than the two included, the Practice Pack adds further official ones.

CFA Level 3 practice tests between mocks

Use shorter sets between full mocks. A CFA Level 3 practice test by topic — one vignette at a time, then a block of item sets — shows which learning modules are weak while there is still time to fix them. Keep a log of the CFA Level 3 questions you miss and the reason: knowledge gap, misread vignette, or running out of time.

A daily habit — a CFA Level 3 question of the day, or a single vignette each morning — helps keep ethics and performance measurement fresh. It does not replace a full CFA Level 3 practice exam under time pressure, and you should sit at least the two official CFA Level 3 practice exams before the real one.

A CFA Level 3 study plan

CFA Institute says successful candidates report studying on average over 300 hours for each level, and its Learning Ecosystem includes a CFA Level 3 study planner that spreads the curriculum over the weeks you have. A simple order for your CFA Level 3 study plan:

• Weeks 1–2: read the topic outlines, try an example question cold, and schedule the Practical Skills Module (CFA Institute estimates 10–20 hours) so it does not compete with revision later.
• Main phase: work through the core topics and your pathway in proportion to their weights, with practice questions after each learning module.
• From about 60 days before the window: take the two official mock exams and revise from your error log.
• Final weeks: timed essay practice and ethics review.

Preparing for CFA Level 3: the essay sets

Preparing for CFA Level 3 means preparing for the essay sets in their own right. They reward short, precise answers that address exactly what the vignette asks — a recommendation, a justification, a calculation — in English. Practise writing answers by hand or on screen under time pressure, and compare them line by line with the model answer.

Good CFA Level 3 exam preparation also means reading the vignette once, carefully, and answering only from the information it gives; CFA Institute states that all questions must be answered based on the vignette.

Independent CFA Level 3 prep is optional. CFA Institute lists the providers that take part in its Prep Provider Program, who agree to keep their material consistent with the current curriculum and exam.
