CFA Level III is the last of the three CFA Program exams from CFA Institute. To sit it you must have passed Level II. Registration costs USD 1,240 early or USD 1,590 standard. In February 2026, 50% of candidates passed.

What is CFA Level III?
Level III is the final exam of the CFA Program, run by CFA Institute. It centres on portfolio management and wealth planning, and CFA Institute says its mix of item set and constructed response questions is meant to reveal how you integrate concepts and apply knowledge to real-world scenarios.
Passing Level III does not by itself make you a charterholder. CFA Institute requires you to pass all three exams, complete 4,000 hours of relevant professional work experience over at least three years, and become a CFA Institute member before you can use the CFA designation. The cert is the charter; Level III is the last exam on the way to it.

CFA Level 3 requirements
The requirements for CFA Level 3 are short: you must have passed the Level II exam and meet the CFA Program enrollment requirements. There is no separate experience requirement to sit the exam; the 4,000 hours of work experience matter for the charter, not for registration.
Two more rules shape your timing. You choose your pathway when you register, and it cannot be changed once registration is complete — only if you retake Level III. And CFA Institute allows at most two attempts per calendar year, not in consecutive windows or windows less than six months apart, with a maximum of six attempts per level.
Since 2025, Level III candidates must also complete a Practical Skills Module before they receive their exam result. It is not graded, but completion is required.

How much does CFA Level III cost?
CFA Institute announced the current prices for exams from February 2026: USD 1,240 if you register by the early deadline and USD 1,590 at the standard deadline. The one-time USD 350 enrollment fee was dropped at the same time. Its dates and fees page puts the cost of all three levels at USD 3,520 to 4,570, which matches these figures.
Rescheduling your appointment within the exam window costs USD 250. Exact registration deadlines for each window are shown in CFA Institute’s exam calendar.

CFA Level 3 exam format and pass mark
The exam has 11 item sets and 11 essay sets. Each item set is a vignette with four multiple-choice questions worth 3 points each; each essay set is worth 12 points, and you answer in English. Two of the 22 sets — one of each type — are being trialled and are not scored. Testing time is 4 hours 24 minutes in two equal sessions, with an optional break between them.
As for the pass mark: CFA Level 3 results depend on a minimum passing score that CFA Institute does not publish as a number. CFA Institute defines it simply as the score needed to pass; its Board of Governors sets it after an exam only when the curriculum or candidate population changes significantly, and otherwise it is carried forward by equating. There is no penalty for wrong answers.
Dates, pass rates, results and timing are covered in more detail on the CFA Level 3 exam page.

CFA Level 3 course outline and syllabus
The Level III syllabus has five core topics plus your pathway. CFA Institute publishes the weights, and the topic outlines for 2027 list the learning modules — for example capital market expectations and asset allocation with real-world constraints under Asset Allocation, and options strategies and currency management under Derivatives and Risk Management.
- Pathway (Portfolio Management, Private Wealth or Private Markets) — 30–35%
- Asset Allocation — 15–20%
- Portfolio Construction — 15–20%
- Derivatives and Risk Management — 10–15%
- Ethical and Professional Standards — 10–15%
- Performance Measurement — 5–10%

Which Level III pathway should you choose?
CFA Institute describes the three pathways this way: Portfolio Management contains the more advanced, public-markets content of the earlier programme; Private Wealth covers serving high-net-worth clients worth US$5 million or more; Private Markets addresses private markets investing mainly from the general partner’s perspective.
All three lead to the same charter, and the pathway does not appear on it. Choose the one closest to your work or the role you want, because it carries a third of the exam and cannot be switched after registration.

CFA Level 3 pass rate
CFA Institute publishes pass rates for every window. In February 2026, 11,269 candidates sat Level III and 50% passed; CFA Institute gave the ten-year average as 51%. Roughly one in two candidates passes, even though everyone who sits it has already passed Levels I and II.

CFA Level 3 prep providers
CFA Institute’s own Learning Ecosystem, included with registration, holds the full curriculum, practice questions, official mock exams and a study planner. If you want a course, a bootcamp or a question bank from an independent provider on top, start with how CFA Institute itself treats those providers.
CFA Institute runs a Prep Provider Program for this. Participation is voluntary and subject to CFA Institute approval, and providers agree to deliver material consistent with the current curriculum and exam and to refrain from advertising their customers’ pass rates. CFA Institute lists participating providers but does not rank them, so there is no official answer to which is the best CFA Level 3 prep provider. Check that a provider is in the programme, that its material is for your exam year and pathway, and that it offers essay practice, not only multiple choice.

CFA Level 3 salary: is it worth it?
CFA Institute does not publish a CFA Level 3 salary, and passing Level III is not the same as holding the charter. What it does publish is a figure for charterholders: an average total compensation of USD 267k across all job functions on its career prospects page, without a stated method there. Treat it as CFA Institute’s own claim about charterholders, not a forecast for a candidate.
Whether Level III is worth it depends on where you are: if you have passed Level II, it is the last exam between you and the charter, at around 300 hours of study by CFA Institute’s own account and a registration fee of USD 1,240–1,590.

CFA Level 3 practice questions
Certsqill’s CFA Level III practice questions are expert-developed and weighted to the Level III topic weights: every question explains each answer option, and a readiness score for each topic shows whether asset allocation, portfolio construction and your pathway are ready before you test.
