CCNP training and courses: what Cisco offers and how to choose

Cisco requires no course before the CCNP Enterprise exams. It does run official training for both the 350-401 ENCOR core exam and each concentration exam, online and in a classroom, and those courses also earn Continuing Education credits towards recertification.

Do you need CCNP training?

No. Cisco states “Prerequisites: None” for the ENCOR core exam, and no course is mandatory for any CCNP Enterprise exam. Training is a way to cover the material, not a condition for booking.

Where CCNP training does pay off is recertification. CCNP Enterprise is valid for three years, and Cisco lets professional-level holders recertify by earning 80 Continuing Education (CE) credits, which can come from CE-eligible training. If you take official Cisco training, CCNP recertification gets easier: a course taken for the exam can count again later.

Official Cisco CCNP training and courses

Cisco lists its own training options for CCNP Enterprise: Cisco U. guided learning paths with hands-on practice, instructor-led training through Cisco and authorized Learning Partners, Cisco Press titles, the Cisco learning catalog, and discussion forums on the Cisco Learning Network.

Each exam has a matching course. Cisco’s exam topics name Implementing Cisco Enterprise Advanced Routing and Services as the course that prepares candidates for 300-410 ENARSI, and Implementing and Operating Cisco Enterprise Network Core Technologies is the course for the ENCOR core exam. Cisco’s exam pages pair each exam with a Cisco U. learning path and instructor-led training, so official preparation is organised per exam: the core course plus the course for the concentration you choose.

The CCNP ENCOR course

Cisco ENCOR training is built around one course, Implementing and Operating Cisco Enterprise Network Core Technologies, which prepares you for the 350-401 ENCOR exam. Passing that exam earns the Cisco Certified Specialist – Enterprise Core certification and satisfies the core requirement for both CCNP Enterprise and CCIE Enterprise Infrastructure.

Cisco lists 31 labs in the course outline, covering topics such as CAM and CEF analysis, spanning tree, EtherChannel, OSPF, EBGP, HSRP and VRRP, NAT, VRF, GRE, NetFlow, IP SLAs, ACLs, AAA, Python scripting, NETCONF and RESTCONF. Completing it earns 64 CE credits towards recertification.

No prerequisites are required for the course. Cisco recommends knowledge of implementing enterprise LAN networks, basic enterprise routing and switching, and basic Python scripting, and points to its CCNA and PRNE offerings for those skills. Cisco’s course page also notes that some wireless content comes from the v1.1 exam and is not covered by ENCOR v1.2, so those sections can be skipped.

CCNP online training and classroom options

For CCNP online training, Cisco offers the ENCOR course as a Cisco U. learning path with pre- and post-assessments, which you work through at your own pace. If you prefer a class, the same course runs instructor-led, in person or virtually, through Cisco and authorized Learning Partners.

Which format suits you depends on how you learn rather than on the exam. Taking a CCNP course online gives you flexibility and lets you repeat labs; a live class adds a fixed schedule and an instructor to question. Either way, check that the course version matches the exam topics version Cisco currently lists for your exam.

CCNP bootcamps

A CCNP boot camp compresses a course into an intensive block of days. Cisco does not run a separate “bootcamp” certification route, so what matters is what the programme is built on. Before paying for a CCNP bootcamp, check that it uses the official Cisco course for your exam or tracks the current exam topics, that it includes hands-on labs, and whether it is CE-eligible if you want the training to count towards recertification.

Remember that CCNP is two exams. A programme that covers only ENCOR prepares you for the core exam and the Enterprise Core Specialist certification, not the full CCNP.

How to pick the best CCNP course

There is no single best CCNP course for everyone, but the same tests apply to any CCNP certification training you consider:

  • It matches the current exam topics. Cisco publishes exam topics for each exam and states they may change at any time without notice.
  • It is weighted like the exam. For ENARSI, Cisco weights Layer 3 technologies at 35%, infrastructure services at 25%, and VPN technologies and infrastructure security at 20% each; a course should spend its time in similar proportions.
  • It includes enough lab time. CCNP exams test implementation and troubleshooting, which you only learn by configuring devices.
  • It earns CE credits if you want it to count towards recertification later.

From training to exam readiness

A CCNP training course teaches the material; practice questions show whether you can apply it under exam conditions. Cisco lists a practice exam on its ENARSI exam page alongside the learning path.

In Certsqill’s CCNP Enterprise question bank, every question explains each answer option and your results build a readiness score per domain.
