What CompTIA Network training has to cover

Good CompTIA Network training follows CompTIA’s five N10-009 domains and their weights: networking concepts 23%, network implementation 20%, network operations 19%, network security 14% and network troubleshooting 24%.

The exam is a maximum of 90 questions in 90 minutes, a mix of multiple choice and performance-based questions, and you pass at 720 on a scale of 100 to 900. A Network Plus course that is only slides leaves the performance-based part to chance.

CompTIA also lists what N10-009 added compared with the previous version: SD-WAN, infrastructure as code, VxLAN, IDF and MDF, and zero-trust architecture with SASE/SSE. If a course does not mention them, it may have been written for the retired exam.

CompTIA’s own Network+ course options: CertMaster

The CompTIA Network course straight from the exam owner is the CertMaster range. CompTIA describes CertMaster Learn as combining instructional content, videos, performance-based questions and hands-on labs; CertMaster Labs as hands-on practice with real-world software, virtual machines and networks; CertMaster Practice as adaptive practice that pinpoints knowledge gaps; and CertMaster Perform as an all-in-one product that combines instruction, videos, assessments and immersive labs.

CompTIA also offers CertMaster Study as an interactive alternative to an eBook. On the Network+ certification page, three bundles include an exam voucher with Retake Assurance.

Network Plus boot camp: how to judge one

A Network Plus boot camp compresses the material into a short, intensive block, usually with an instructor. It suits people who already work with networks and want a deadline; it is hard going if most of the content is new. Before you pay for a Network Plus bootcamp, check these points:

• It names the exam code it teaches: N10-009.
• It covers all five domains in roughly CompTIA’s proportions, with troubleshooting at 24%.
• It includes hands-on labs for the performance-based questions.
• It includes practice questions with explanations, not only lectures.
• If a voucher is included, it states which exam series the voucher covers and when it expires.

Network Plus certification classes: online or classroom?

Network Plus certification classes come in three forms: a physical classroom, live online classes at fixed times, and self-paced online training. Classroom and live online give you an instructor to ask and a timetable; self-paced lets you repeat the hard parts and fit study around work, but needs your own plan.

Neither is better for everyone. The useful question about any Network Plus certification course is which format you will actually finish, and whether it gives you enough hands-on practice for the performance-based part of the exam.

Network Plus training and the voucher

Some Network Plus training includes an exam voucher, some does not. If yours does, CompTIA’s voucher terms apply: vouchers are valid until the date on the voucher and that date cannot be extended, they cannot be refunded or exchanged, and they are exam series specific and country and currency specific.

CompTIA also states that if you do not pass, you need another voucher for the next attempt, and that vouchers and training materials are offered at considerable discounts for students. Prices for courses from other providers are set by those providers.

Free Network Plus courses: what is genuinely free

The free official resource is the objectives summary on CompTIA’s Network+ page, which lists every domain and its weight. CompTIA’s CertMaster products are paid. CompTIA mentions that special programmes may help some people get trained and certified for free or nearly free, but it does not list them as a general offer.

Free Network Plus courses beyond that vary in quality and in which exam version they cover. Use the objectives as the checklist and test yourself early, so you know which domain needs the course time.
