Electrician license requirements and how to get licensed
Electrician license requirements are set by each state, and they come down to three things: supervised hours, a state exam and an application to the licensing agency. In Texas, the example used here, an apprentice license needs no exam, a journeyman license needs 8,000 supervised hours plus an exam, and a master license needs 12,000 hours, two years as a journeyman and an exam.

Electrician licensing requirements vary by state
There is no national standard for electrician requirements in the US. The licensing agency in each state decides which levels exist and what each one takes, so always check the agency where you will work. The figures on this page come from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) and apply to Texas only.
The basic requirements for an electrician license in Texas follow a ladder: apprentice, then journeyman, then master. Each step up adds supervised hours, and every step above apprentice adds an exam.
- Electrical Apprentice: at least 16 years old, works under a master, journeyman or residential wireman
- Residential Wireman: 4,000 hours, or an approved career and technology education program, plus an exam
- Journeyman Electrician: 8,000 hours under a master electrician, plus an exam
- Master Electrician: 12,000 hours, at least two years as a journeyman, plus an exam

How to get an apprentice electrician license
How do you get an electrician apprentice license in Texas? Apply online and pay the non-refundable US$20 fee. There are no experience qualifications and no examination requirements. If you register online and report no criminal convictions, TDLR automatically issues a temporary license; with a conviction you add a Criminal History Questionnaire, and the review can take one to six weeks.
That is the entire state requirement for how to get apprentice electrician license status in Texas. Joining a formal apprenticeship program is a separate step with its own entry rules (see below).

How to get a journeyman electrician license
In Texas you can apply for the journeyman exam once you have at least 7,000 hours of on-the-job training under a Texas-licensed master electrician; the license itself requires 8,000 hours. Each supervising master electrician signs an Experience Verification Form.
You must apply by mail for the initial license, with a non-refundable US$30 application fee. After TDLR verifies the application, you are approved to schedule the licensing exam.

Master electrician and contractor requirements
A Texas master electrician needs at least two years as a licensed journeyman electrician (journeyman industrial experience does not count), 12,000 hours of on-the-job training under a master electrician and a passing score on the master electrician exam. The application fee is US$45.
An electrical contractor business must be a licensed master electrician or employ one, and must keep workers’ compensation and general liability insurance in force.

Electrician education requirements
The Texas license pages we checked list hours and exams, not a diploma. The one education route TDLR names is for the Residential Wireman license, which can be earned through an approved career and technology education program instead of 4,000 hours.
Education requirements for electrician apprenticeship programs can be stricter than the state’s. For IBEW/NECA joint apprenticeship programs, applicants must be at least high school graduates or have a GED and show one full year of high school algebra with a passing grade, and they take an aptitude test in algebra and functions and reading comprehension.

Electrician skill requirements tested on the exam
No agency publishes a single list of electrician skill requirements, but the exam outline shows what a licensed electrician must be able to do. The Texas journeyman exam tests definitions, calculations, theory and plans; services and service equipment; feeders; branch circuit calculations and conductors; wiring methods and materials; equipment and devices; motors and generators; control devices and disconnecting means; special occupancies; and renewable energy technologies, all against the National Electrical Code.
In practice that means two core skills: finding the right NEC rule quickly in an open-book exam, and doing load and conductor calculations correctly.
