Electrician study guide: how to study for the license exam
The most important electrician book for the license exam is the National Electrical Code edition your state tests. In Texas, the example used here, the exam is open book with the 2023 NEC as the only allowed reference, and the official candidate bulletin lists exactly how many questions come from each content area. Build your electrician study guide on those two documents.

The one electrician book you need: the NEC
For a code-based license exam, the essential book for electrician candidates is the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70). In Texas it is the only reference allowed in the exam: the 2023 edition, soft-bound, with permanent publisher index tabs only. Loose-leaf, spiral-bound and ring-bound copies are not allowed, and you may highlight and add notes before the exam but not during it.
Editions matter. The Texas bulletin references the 2023 NEC from 1 October 2023, while NFPA has issued a 2026 edition of NFPA 70. Buy and study the edition named in your state’s current exam bulletin, not simply the newest one.

Journeyman electrician exam study guide: follow the outline
The best study guide for journeyman electrician test preparation is the official content outline, because it tells you where the points are. In the Texas journeyman exam, wiring methods and materials (18 items) and branch circuit calculations and conductors (15) make up a third of the 80 scored questions.
- Wiring methods and materials: 18
- Branch circuit calculations and conductors: 15
- Equipment and devices: 10
- Services, service equipment and separately derived systems: 9
- Special occupancies, equipment and conditions: 9
- Definitions, calculations, theory and plans: 6
- Motors and generators: 5
- Feeders: 3
- Control devices and disconnecting means: 3
- Renewable energy technologies: 2

How to study for journeyman electrician test day
In an open-book code exam, the skill is speed of lookup. Study for journeyman electrician test conditions by answering questions with the NEC in front of you and a clock running: learn the article structure, tab the chapters you use most, and practise branch circuit and conductor calculations until they are routine.
If you do not pass, the Texas exam gives a diagnostic report showing strengths and weaknesses by area. Turn that report into your next electrician study plan.

Electrician aptitude test study guide for apprenticeship applicants
An electrician apprenticeship study guide is different, because the apprenticeship entry test is not a code exam. For IBEW/NECA joint apprenticeship programs, the aptitude test has two parts: Algebra and Functions (33 items, 46 minutes), a test of your ability to solve problems using algebra, and Reading Comprehension (36 items, 51 minutes), which measures how well you obtain information from written passages.
A good study guide for electrician apprenticeship applicants therefore means high school algebra (applicants must show a full year of it) plus timed reading practice. The organization publishes a short sample test; its reading passage is shorter than those on the actual test.

Electrician books for beginners and study to be an electrician
If you want to study to be an electrician from scratch, start with the same foundations the exams test: electrical theory, definitions and plans, then the NEC chapters on wiring methods and branch circuits. Electrician books for beginners are useful only if they explain the code you will be tested on; check which NEC edition a book is based on before you buy it.
There is no single ultimate electrician guide. Electrician study works best as a loop: read a section of the code, answer questions on it, check the explanation, repeat.
Electrician study guide with practice questions
Certsqill turns the outline into practice: expert-developed questions mapped to the exam content areas, an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per area, so you can see whether wiring methods, calculations or motors still need work before you book the exam.
