The firefighter exam: written test, physical test and interview
There is no single national firefighter exam: each fire department or civil service agency runs its own hiring test. Most follow the steps the IAFF describes: an application, a written exam, the CPAT or a department-specific physical test, interviews and a psychological evaluation, then a background check and medical clearance. The examples below come from official department and agency pages.

What is the firefighter exam?
The firefighter exam is the selection process a fire department uses to hire entry-level firefighters, not one standard test. When people search for a firefighter test, a firefighter entrance exam or a firefighter entry test, they usually mean the written part. The full exam for firefighter jobs usually has more stages: the IAFF lists application, written exam, physical ability testing (the CPAT or a department-specific test), interviews and psychological evaluation, then background check and medical clearance.
Departments differ in order and detail. Portland Fire & Rescue, for example, says the number and order of its steps can change without notice, requires a pre-employment medical exam under NFPA 1582, and requires proof of an Oregon EMT before a conditional offer. Always work from the job announcement of the department you apply to.

The firefighter written exam
The written exam for firefighter applicants is usually a cognitive and behavioral test rather than a test of fire science. The City of Franklin, Tennessee, describes its written exam as assessing reading comprehension, mathematics, mechanical reasoning and human relations. That is typical of a firefighter aptitude test: it measures whether you can learn the job, not whether you already know it.
Each department decides which test it uses, how it scores it and how long a score counts. In Franklin, test scores are valid for one year and the testing fee of about US$65 is paid to the testing provider.

The NTN firefighter test (National Testing Network)
The National Testing Network firefighter test appears in many job announcements. Portland Fire & Rescue requires entry-level applicants to complete the FireTeam test and the Public Safety Self-Assessment 1 through NTN. Costa Mesa, California, requires the FireTEAM entry-level firefighter examination, booked through NTN, describes it as job simulation testing and forwards candidate scores automatically to the city. Franklin, Tennessee, gives its NTN exam online through the NTN candidate portal.
If your department uses the NTN firefighter test, the same score may be usable for several departments, depending on each department’s rules. Check the score date window your target department accepts before you test.

Firefighter civil service exam: the Massachusetts example
In civil service systems the firefighter civil service exam is run by a state or city agency, and passing puts you on a ranked eligible list. Massachusetts is a clear example: its 2026 Municipal Firefighter Examination consists of a written test and an entry-level physical ability test (ELPAT). Once you pass both, your name goes on the list to be considered for hire.
For the firefighter exam 2026 in Massachusetts, applications closed on 31 August 2026, the written examination period ran from 2 to 10 October 2026, the written exam fee was US$75 with a fee waiver form available, and the eligible list date was still to be announced when we checked. Other states and cities use different calendars, so watch your own agency’s exam schedule.

CPAT firefighter test and other physical tests
The Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) was developed by the IAFF and IAFC as a fair, valid and legally defensible evaluation. The CPAT firefighter test is pass/fail with a time limit of 10 minutes 20 seconds, and departments may not rank candidates by completion time. You wear a 50 lb weighted vest throughout, plus a 25 lb hose pack on the stair climb.

- Ladder Raise and Extension
- Hose Drag
- Equipment Carry
- Forcible Entry
- Search
- Rescue Drag

Firefighter physical test: PAT, agility and fitness tests
Not every department uses CPAT as its physical test for firefighter candidates. The IAFF itself mentions department-specific tests, and Massachusetts uses its own entry-level physical ability test. A firefighter PAT test, a firefighter agility test or a firefighter fitness test can therefore mean different events and standards; the job announcement or the agency’s PAT guide is the only reliable description.
For CPAT, preparation is built in: candidates must attend at least two mandatory sessions within eight weeks of the official test date and complete at least two timed practice runs within 30 days of the test. If you are preparing for a physical agility test firefighter recruits must pass elsewhere, ask whether practice sessions are offered.

Wildland firefighter pack test
Wildland firefighting uses the Work Capacity Test. The firefighter pack test for arduous duty, which applies to all wildland firefighters, is 3 miles carrying 45 lb, completed within 45 minutes. The moderate field test is 2 miles with 25 lb in 30 minutes, and the light walk test is 1 mile without a pack in 16 minutes.
The Forest Service asks you to complete a health screening questionnaire before conditioning for or taking any level of the test, and to start training at least four weeks before your test date, building up from a flat three-mile hike without a pack to the full 45 lb.

Firefighter I test questions and the Firefighter 1 practical test
Firefighter I is a certification level, not a hiring test. NFPA 1001, the Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, sets the job performance requirements recommended for Fire Fighter I and Fire Fighter II, covering areas such as fireground operations, SCBA use, ventilation, search and rescue, and hose testing.
Firefighter I test questions and the firefighter 1 practical test are built on those requirements, but the written format, skill sheets and testing agency depend on where you certify. Use the skill sheets from your academy or certifying agency to prepare. A firefighter 1 practice test is useful for the written knowledge; the practical part has to be trained hands-on.

Firefighter interview questions and answers
The interview stage often includes a panel interview; Portland, for example, holds a panel interview and later a Fire Chief panel interview. Prepare for questions for firefighter interview panels such as why you want the job, how you work in a team, how you handled conflict or stress, and what you know about the department and its community.
Prepare firefighter interview questions and answers from your own experience: short, specific examples with what you did and what happened. There are no official model answers; panels score against criteria set by the department.

Firefighter polygraph questions and other background steps
Background checks are standard; the IAFF lists background check and medical clearance as a hiring step, and Portland reviews work history, references, driving record and criminal history. Whether a polygraph is used depends on the department: none of the official pages we checked mention one. We therefore do not publish firefighter polygraph test questions; if your department uses a polygraph, its announcement or background investigator will explain the process.

What is a firefighter PASS device?
PASS stands for personal alert safety system. NFPA’s standard for these devices is NFPA 1982, Standard on Personal Alert Safety Systems (PASS). A question about the firefighter PASS device is more likely in Firefighter I training and testing than in an entry-level written exam, which measures aptitude rather than equipment knowledge.

Firefighter exam prep and firefighter practice test questions
Good firefighter exam prep starts with the announcement: which written test, which physical test, which deadline. Before you buy any firefighter exam practice test, use the official practice material. Franklin points candidates to a practice test through NTN, Costa Mesa to online practice tests, and Massachusetts to its written examination and PAT preparation guides; for a sample firefighter aptitude test, these are the official places to look. Searching for a national firefighter selection inventory practice test? None of the departments we checked use that test, so use the practice material your announcement names.
Certsqill’s firefighter practice exam material is expert-developed and covers the reading, math, mechanical reasoning and judgment areas common in a firefighter written exam practice test. Every question has an explanation for each answer option, and your results build a readiness score per area, so you can see where you stand before test day. Use it as a firefighter written exam practice and firefighter civil service practice test alongside your department’s official material. A 7-day money-back guarantee applies.
