What is the GCSA certification?
GCSA stands for GIAC Cloud Security Automation. GIAC describes it as a credential that validates a practitioner’s understanding of the cloud native toolchain and DevSecOps methodology, including the security controls that belong in CI/CD pipelines. In practice it is about building security into how cloud systems are deployed and run, rather than bolting it on afterwards.
GIAC names a broad audience: anyone working in a public cloud or DevOps environment, developers, software architects, operations engineers, system administrators, security analysts, engineers and consultants, auditors and risk managers. The common thread is that you touch pipelines, containers or infrastructure as code and need to secure them.
GIAC shows no retirement or “In Abeyance” notice for GCSA; its pricing list marks other certifications that way, not this one. As of 10 October 2026 the GCSA cert is an active, bookable GIAC certification.

How much does the GCSA certification cost?
A standalone GCSA certification attempt costs $999. GIAC lists its prices in USD and states that they exclude applicable sales tax.
Plan for the other line items GIAC publishes for GCSA: an exam retake is $899, an attempt extension is $479, and an official practice exam is $399. A missed proctored appointment incurs a $175 reseating fee and comes with a seven-day extension from the current deadline.
You can also buy the attempt as part of a SANS training bundle. GIAC points to an affiliate bundle option for that, but does not print the bundle price on its pricing page, so the figure to rely on is the one shown when you register.

What is the GCSA exam format?
The GCSA exam is one proctored exam with 75 questions and a two-hour time limit. All GIAC exams are web-based and must be proctored, either remotely through ProctorU or onsite at a Pearson VUE testing center.
Once a standalone attempt is activated, you have 120 days to sit the exam. That window is the practical deadline for your study plan: book the slot early and work backwards from it.
GIAC exams are open book, but not open internet or open computer. You may bring printed books and notes; printed material that looks like practice test or exam questions with answers is strictly prohibited. Workstation space is limited, so an organised printed index matters more than a stack of paper.

GCSA passing score
GIAC has set the GCSA passing score at 66%. According to GIAC, that figure comes from a psychometric standard-setting study and applies to all candidates who receive the exam version released on or after 29 June 2024.
With 75 questions, 66% leaves little room for a weak area. Use the objective list below to check that you can handle every topic, not just the ones closest to your daily work.

What is on the GCSA exam?
GIAC publishes 18 exam certification objectives for GCSA. They cover the DevOps workflow and how to secure it, infrastructure as code and configuration management, container orchestration from architecture to runtime security, microservices and API gateways, secrets, policy and compliance as code, observability and automated remediation.
GIAC does not publish a weighting per objective, so treat them as equally important until you have evidence of your own weak spots.
- Architecture and Fundamentals of Container Orchestration
- Automated Cloud Remediation
- Cloud Compliance as Code
- Cloud Native Observability
- Container Lifecycle Security
- Deploying Cloud Infrastructure as Code
- Edge Identity and Authentication
- Managing Secrets
- Microservice API Gateways
- Microservices Architecture and Deployment
- Policy Enforcement
- Risks, Authentication, and Access-Control of Container Orchestration
- Runtime Security in Container Orchestration
- Securing the DevOps Workflow
- Software Supply Chain Security
- Understanding the DevOps Workflow
- Utilizing Configuration Management
- Workload Security in Container Orchestration

GCSA prerequisites
GIAC lists no formal prerequisites for GCSA. You can buy an attempt without proving experience or completing a course first.
The associated SANS course, SEC540, does name what it expects you to bring: familiarity with Linux command shells, a basic understanding of version control with git and of continuous integration systems such as GitLab CI, and basic use of code editors. Introductory knowledge of containers and Kubernetes and hands-on experience with AWS or Microsoft Azure are listed as helpful. That is a realistic starting point for the exam too.

GCSA training: SANS SEC540
The official training for GCSA is SANS SEC540: Cloud Native Security and DevSecOps Automation, which SANS maps to the GIAC Cloud Security Automation certification. It runs five days instructor-led or 38 hours self-paced and carries 38 CPEs.
SANS offers it in person, virtually or self-paced; the self-paced OnDemand version lists at $8,780 USD with four months of access, and event prices vary by city and currency. GIAC itself states that training is available live and OnDemand, but training is not required to sit the exam.

How long is the GCSA certification valid?
GIAC certifications are kept active by collecting 36 credits over four years. The certification renewal fee listed for GCSA is $499; GIAC adds that additional renewals within two years of paying a full-price renewal cost $249.
Plan renewal from the start rather than at the end of the four years. GIAC’s renewal page explains which activities count towards the 36 credits; SANS lists SEC540 itself at 38 CPEs.

GCSA salary and career value
GIAC does not publish salary figures for GCSA holders, and this page does not repeat unverified numbers from elsewhere. What GIAC does state is the scope: cloud native toolchains, DevSecOps and CI/CD security, which places the certification in roles where development, operations and security overlap.
If you are weighing the cost against the career value, compare job descriptions in your own market that ask for container, pipeline or infrastructure-as-code security against the 18 objectives above. That gives you a sharper answer than any salary average.
GCSA vs GPCS
Both are GIAC cloud certifications with 75 questions in two hours, but they look at the cloud from different angles. GIAC says GPCS, GIAC Public Cloud Security, validates a practitioner’s preparedness to secure public and multicloud environments across AWS, Azure and Google Cloud, with a 64% passing score.
GCSA is narrower and closer to engineering: pipelines, containers, Kubernetes, infrastructure as code and policy as code. If your work is configuring cloud accounts and services, GPCS fits the description better; if you build and secure the delivery pipeline and workloads, GCSA does.

GCSA practice questions, practice tests and dumps
GIAC sells an official GCSA practice exam for $399. GIAC states that practice exams simulate the real test engine and question style, that the bank of practice questions is limited, and that practice exams never include actual exam questions.
Stay away from exam dumps. GIAC’s Exam Integrity Policy names any use of or reference to exam dump sites containing actual or possible GIAC questions as a violation, with sanctions up to revocation of previously issued GIAC certifications and bans from future GIAC certifications.
Certsqill’s GCSA practice questions come with an explanation for every option and a readiness score per domain.
