What is the GICSP certification?
GICSP stands for Global Industrial Cyber Security Professional. GIAC, which prepares, administers and scores the exam, says the GICSP certification validates a practitioner’s capability to achieve security throughout the industrial control systems lifecycle, bridging expertise in IT, engineering and cyber security. It is vendor-neutral and practitioner-focused.
That bridge is the point. Industrial control systems — the PLCs, HMIs and networks behind plants, pipelines and utilities — are run by engineers and secured by IT people who often speak different languages. GICSP is meant to show that you understand both sides: why availability and safety come first in a control system, and how security controls have to fit around that.
GIAC names the audience: ICS IT practitioners including operational technology support, ICS security analysts, security engineers, industry managers and professionals, and vendors.

GICSP certification cost
GIAC publishes its prices in US dollars, excluding sales tax. For GICSP, a certification attempt costs US$999. If you fail, an exam retake costs US$899. If you need more time before your attempt expires, an attempt extension costs US$479. Missing a proctored exam appointment costs a US$175 reseating fee.
Every four years you pay the certification renewal fee of US$499; GIAC charges US$249 for each additional renewal within two years of a full-price renewal, which helps if you hold several GIAC certifications. An official GICSP practice exam costs US$399 on its own.
If you register for the attempt together with SANS training, GIAC points to an affiliate bundle option instead of the standalone price; the bundle price is not listed on GIAC’s pricing page.

GICSP exam format and passing score
The GICSP exam is one proctored exam with 82 questions and a 3-hour time limit. The minimum passing score is 71%. That gives you a little over two minutes per question.
All GIAC exams are web-based and must be proctored. You choose between remote proctoring through ProctorU and onsite proctoring at a Pearson VUE test centre.
GIAC’s GICSP page does not state whether the exam is open book, so check the current testing rules in your GIAC account before you rely on printed notes.
- Questions: 82
- Time limit: 3 hours
- Minimum passing score: 71%
- Delivery: ProctorU (remote) or Pearson VUE (onsite)

What is on the GICSP exam?
GIAC lists the areas the GICSP certification covers. They run from how control systems are built, through how they are attacked, to how they are defended and governed.
The more detailed outcome statements include hardening endpoints, the Purdue model levels 0 to 3, the differences between ICS and IT, developing a security programme and policies, threat modelling, ICS protocols and cryptography, risk-based disaster recovery and wireless technologies.
- Industrial control system components, purposes, deployments, drivers and constraints
- ICS attack surfaces, methods and tools
- Control system defence architectures and techniques
- Incident response in control system environments
- ICS security governance models and resources

GICSP training and courses
GIAC does not make training a requirement, but it points to official affiliate training for GICSP. The course linked from the GICSP page is SANS ICS/SCADA Cyber Security Essentials, available as live training and OnDemand.
Whether you take a course or self-study, use GIAC’s own list of covered areas as your checklist. If you come from IT, plan extra time for control system components and engineering constraints; if you come from engineering, plan it for attack techniques and security architecture.

How to study for GICSP: practice exams
GIAC sells official practice exams for GICSP at US$399. GIAC describes them as a simulation of the real exam, but notes that the bank of practice questions is limited and that practice exams never include actual exam questions. Use them to test timing and coverage, not to memorise answers.
A sensible study plan: work through the five covered areas, then take a timed practice run of 82 questions in three hours, and go back to the areas where you dropped below the 71% line before you book the real attempt.

GICSP exam dumps
GIAC is unusually explicit here. Its Exam Integrity Policy prohibits any use of or reference to exam dump sites which contain actual or possible GIAC questions or answers, and requires candidates not to share or accept knowledge of test content.
The consequences are serious: GIAC may revoke certifications effective to the date they were issued and ban candidates from future GIAC certifications. A dump puts your whole GIAC record at risk, not just one attempt.

How long is GICSP valid and how do you renew it?
GIAC certifications require renewal every four years. To renew, GIAC asks you to collect 36 credits over the four-year cycle and pay the non-refundable certification maintenance fee of US$499. You can also renew by exam; renewal registration opens two years before your expiry date.
GIAC recommends the credits route. Credits can come from GIAC and SANS affiliated programmes, career development activities and other categories, each with its own cap.

GICSP vs GRID
GRID, the GIAC Response and Industrial Defense certification, is GIAC’s other industrial certification. Its exam has 75 questions in 2 hours with a minimum passing score of 74%, and it is aimed at ICS incident response teams, SOC analysts, red teams and active defenders.
The two are complementary rather than competing. GICSP covers the breadth of securing a control system across its lifecycle — components, architecture, governance. GRID goes deeper into detection, monitoring, ICS forensics and incident response. If your job is defending a running plant day to day, read both outlines before you choose.

GICSP practice questions
Certsqill’s GICSP practice questions are expert-developed: every question explains each answer option, and a readiness score for each covered area shows whether you are clear of the 71% line in every area before you spend a US$999 attempt.
