What is the Google Associate Data Practitioner certification?
Google describes the Associate Data Practitioner as someone who secures and manages data on Google Cloud, with experience using Google Cloud data services for data ingestion, transformation, pipeline management, analysis, machine learning and visualization. Candidates are expected to have a basic understanding of cloud computing concepts such as IaaS, PaaS and SaaS.
It sits at the associate level, below the Professional Data Engineer. With a recommended six months of hands-on experience, it is aimed at people who already do data work in Google Cloud rather than at those designing data platforms.

Associate Data Practitioner exam cost
The registration fee is $125, plus tax where applicable. Google lists no separate retake price on the certification page.
For comparison, Google lists the Professional Data Engineer exam at $200 plus tax.

Associate Data Practitioner exam format
The exam lasts 2 hours and contains 50 to 60 multiple choice and multiple select questions. Multiple select means some questions have more than one correct answer, and you need all of them.
You can take it online-proctored from a remote location or onsite-proctored at a testing center. It is offered in English and Japanese.
Google adds a notice on the certification page: the exam will soon be updated to reflect recent branding changes, and candidates should check the exam guide for the product names used on the exam. Use the current exam guide, not an older study list, to learn the names.

Associate Data Practitioner passing score
Google does not publish a passing score. Its certification FAQ states that the exams are designed only to determine whether a candidate meets a minimum passing standard, and that only pass/fail results are provided.
That means there is no target percentage to aim for. A more useful benchmark is being comfortable in every one of the four sections below, weighted by how much of the exam each one carries.

What is on the Associate Data Practitioner exam?
The official exam guide splits the exam into four sections. Data preparation and ingestion is the largest; pipeline orchestration the smallest. The subsections name concrete tools: BigQuery and Jupyter notebooks for analysis, Looker for dashboards, Cloud Storage and Cloud SQL for availability and disaster recovery, plus defining, training and using ML models.
- Data Preparation and Ingestion — about 30% of the exam
- Data Analysis and Presentation — about 27%
- Data Pipeline Orchestration — about 18%
- Data Management — about 25% (access control, governance, lifecycle, availability, security and privacy compliance)

Prerequisites and recommended experience
There is no prerequisite certification. Google recommends at least six months of experience working with data on Google Cloud.
Six months is a modest bar, but it is hands-on experience: loading data, writing queries, building a simple pipeline and setting access controls. Reading about the services is not a substitute for having used them.

How to prepare for the Google Associate Data Practitioner exam
Google points candidates to three official resources: the exam guide, the Data Practitioner learning path on Google Cloud Skills Boost, and a set of sample questions that shows the format of the questions.
Work section by section through the exam guide and practise each task in a Google Cloud project: ingest and transform data, query it in BigQuery, build a Looker dashboard, schedule a basic pipeline, and configure IAM and lifecycle rules. Use the sample questions to learn the style of the questions; Google presents them as example content, not as a readiness test.

Retake policy and exam rules
For associate and professional exams, Google allows a maximum of four attempts in a two-year period. After a first failed attempt you can retake after 14 days; after a second, you wait 60 days; after a third, 365 days.
Google’s exam terms treat all exam content as confidential and prohibit using unauthorized exam content shared by someone else, including content found online. Breaches can lead to invalidated results, revoked certifications and a ban from the program, without a refund.

How long is the certification valid, and how do you renew it?
Associate certifications are valid for three years from the date you certify. Renewal opens 180 days before the inactive date and remains possible up to 30 days after it; a successful renewal adds three years to the inactive date.
For associate certifications, renewal is done by taking the exam again. Google’s renewal page lists no shorter renewal exam and no continuing education option for this category.

Associate Data Practitioner vs Professional Data Engineer
The Associate Data Practitioner costs $125, recommends six months of hands-on data work on Google Cloud, and is valid for three years. The Professional Data Engineer costs $200, recommends three or more years of industry experience including at least one year designing and managing solutions on Google Cloud, and is valid for two years.
The associate exam tests whether you can do the data work; the professional exam tests whether you can design the systems that data work runs on. Neither is a formal prerequisite for the other.
