GRE study guide: how to study for the GRE
The best GRE study guide starts with ETS’s own material, because ETS writes the test: a free untimed and a timed POWERPREP practice test, the 100-page Math Review, and official books with real questions. Take a practice test first, study the measure where you lose the most points, and finish with a timed full-length test before you book.

How to prepare for GRE exam day: start with a diagnostic
Take POWERPREP 1, ETS’s free untimed full-length practice test, before you study anything. You get correct answers for Verbal and Quant, scored Analytical Writing sample essays with rater commentary and a report that summarises your performance. That report is your starting map.
ETS says many people have prepared successfully using only free materials, so spend money only once you know which measure needs it.

GRE study materials from ETS
Official GRE study materials are the safest choice, because the questions are real ETS questions. These are the GRE test study materials ETS lists:
- POWERPREP 1 (untimed) and POWERPREP 2 (timed): free full-length practice tests
- Math Review: a 100-page refresher of the basic math the test uses, plus a Math Conventions guide
- GRE Mini Quiz and a free 2-hour prep session with the people who make the test
- Official GRE Mentor Course: 500+ authentic practice questions and answers
- GRE Vocabulary Flashcards: 1600+ vocabulary practice questions

GRE prep book options
The main official GRE prep book is The Official Guide to the GRE General Test (US$45 plus shipping). It gives access to four real practice tests: two in the book and two simulated POWERPREP Online tests in your ETS account.
For targeted practice, ETS sells Official GRE Verbal Reasoning Practice Questions and Official GRE Quantitative Reasoning Practice Questions, each with 150 real questions, complete explanations and hints (US$25 each plus shipping). Used together, they work as a GRE exam study guide for each measure.

How to study for the GRE, measure by measure
Quantitative Reasoning: ETS keeps the math at a level generally no higher than a second course in algebra, across arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis. Rebuild the basics with the Math Review, then drill question types, especially Quantitative Comparison and Numeric Entry, with the basic on-screen calculator in mind.
Verbal Reasoning: read the passage before choosing a word, because ETS stresses that many words change meaning with context. GRE vocabulary flashcards help, but test each word in Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence questions, not just in isolation.
Analytical Writing: write timed 30-minute "Analyze an Issue" responses and compare them with ETS’s scored sample essays and rater commentary.

A study plan for the GRE
ETS does not publish a recommended study duration or schedule. The GRE study plan below is our own suggestion, organised in phases rather than fixed weeks, so you can stretch or compress it to your diagnostic result:
- Phase 1, diagnose: take POWERPREP 1 untimed and note your weakest measure and question types.
- Phase 2, rebuild: work through the Math Review or the Verbal question types where you lost the most points.
- Phase 3, practise: mixed sets of official questions under time limits, reviewing every miss.
- Phase 4, simulate: take POWERPREP 2 timed, close the remaining gaps, then book your date.
How long to study for the GRE
There is no official answer to how long to study for GRE success, because ETS publishes none. The honest measure is the gap between your diagnostic result and the scores your programs expect. The bigger the gap, and the further you are from the basic math or reading level the test assumes, the longer your plan.
A useful checkpoint: when your timed practice results stop rising between attempts and meet your targets, you are ready to book.
Choosing among GRE test dates
GRE test dates are not fixed. The test is offered 24 hours a day at home and most days of the week at test centers, so you can book once your timed practice is where you need it. ETS advises allowing time for score delivery and processing by the institution; scores arrive 8 to 10 days after the test.
Work backwards from your earliest application deadline, leave room for a possible retake 21 days later, and set your study plan around that date.
