What is CIPM certification?
CIPM stands for Certified Information Privacy Manager. It is issued by the IAPP, the International Association of Privacy Professionals, and the IAPP describes the ANAB-accredited CIPM designation as saying the holder is a leader in privacy program administration.
Where the IAPP’s CIPP/US, for example, tests knowledge of U.S. privacy law, the IAPP CIPM certification is about operations: building a privacy framework, governing the programme, assessing and protecting data, measuring performance and responding to requests and incidents. Being CIPM certified signals that you can run a privacy programme across its life cycle, not just interpret the rules.

CIPM certification cost
The IAPP sells the CIPM exam for US$550, and the price is the same for members and non-members. The voucher has to be used within one year of purchase.
The exam is the only mandatory cost to get the CIPM cert. Optional costs come from preparation: the official CIPM practice exam (US$45 for members, US$55 for non-members), the official textbook (US$65 or US$75), and the IAPP’s online CIPM training (US$995 or US$1,195), which does not include the exam.
After you pass, the ongoing cost is maintenance: either IAPP membership, which includes it, or a certification maintenance fee of US$250 every two years.
- CIPM exam: US$550
- Official practice exam: US$45 members, US$55 non-members
- Official textbook (Privacy Program Management, Third Edition): US$65 members, US$75 non-members
- Online training: US$995 members, US$1,195 non-members

CIPM exam format and passing score
The CIPM exam has 90 multiple-choice questions and an allotted time of 2.5 hours, which includes a 15-minute break. You can take it from home or the office through Pearson VUE’s OnVUE remote proctoring, or in person at a Pearson VUE test centre. It is offered in English, German, French, Chinese and Brazilian Portuguese.
All core IAPP exams are scored on a scale from 100 to 500, and 300 or above is a pass. Results are normally immediate, and the IAPP allows up to two business days for them to appear in its system.
If you do not pass, you buy a new exam and can schedule the retake no sooner than seven days after your previous attempt.

CIPM syllabus: the six domains
The IAPP publishes the CIPM Body of Knowledge and Exam Blueprint for free. The current version, 4.2.0, has applied since 1 September 2025 and gives a range of questions for each of six domains — this is the CIPM syllabus every study plan should follow.
Framework and governance together account for 26–34 questions; the four operational life cycle domains make up the rest. No single domain dominates, so a study plan that skips one is a risk.
- Domain I — Privacy Program: Developing a Framework — 14–18 questions
- Domain II — Privacy Program: Establishing Program Governance — 12–16 questions
- Domain III — Operational Life Cycle: Assessing Data — 12–16 questions
- Domain IV — Operational Life Cycle: Protecting Personal Data — 9–13 questions
- Domain V — Operational Life Cycle: Sustaining Program Performance — 7–9 questions
- Domain VI — Operational Life Cycle: Responding to Requests and Incidents — 10–14 questions

CIPM requirements
There is no formal requirement to sit the CIPM exam. The IAPP’s candidate handbook sets eligibility requirements only for its Fellow of Information Privacy (FIP) designation, not for the core exams, and the CIPM page lists none.
That makes the CIPM open to anyone, but the content assumes familiarity with how organisations handle personal data. If you are new to privacy, plan extra study time across all six domains.

CIPM training and study materials
The IAPP names its Privacy Program Management training as the preparation for the CIPM. The online version delivers the equivalent of a 13-hour live training through the MyIAPP portal, with video, text, interactions and knowledge checks, and carries 13 CPE credits. The official textbook is Privacy Program Management: Tools for Managing Privacy Within Your Organization, Third Edition.
Before you pay for any course, use the free material: the Body of Knowledge, the Exam Blueprint and the IAPP’s free CIPM study guide, which covers the exam format and includes sample questions. Your study and prep should follow the six domains and their question ranges.

CIPM practice exam and practice questions
The IAPP sells an official CIPM practice exam: 90 practice questions in a PDF, similar in format and content to the real exam, each with the correct answer and an explanation. It costs US$45 for members and US$55 for non-members.
Use it as a CIPM practice test under real conditions — 90 questions, 2.5 hours — rather than reading through it. Because it is a single set, you will need further CIPM practice questions to practise each domain repeatedly. Look for questions that explain why each wrong option is wrong, not just which one is right.

CIPM dumps and leaked exam questions
CIPM exam questions shared online as copies of the live exam are not a shortcut. The IAPP’s candidate handbook states that the questions and answers of the exam are the exclusive and confidential property of the IAPP, that candidates may not disclose them or obtain exam materials from sources other than the IAPP, and that accessing illegally obtained content through dump sites can violate the non-disclosure agreement.
The sanctions the handbook lists include invalidating results, a ban from future exams and revocation of existing certifications. CIPM dumps and so-called CIPM test questions from such sites put the certificate itself at risk; practise with original CIPM questions instead.

How do you maintain the CIPM certificate?
The IAPP’s CPE policy, in force since 7 April 2026, requires 20 hours of continuing professional education for each certification over a two-year term, plus a certification maintenance fee of US$250, which is included in IAPP membership. If you hold several IAPP certifications, CPE credits count towards all of them.

Is CIPM worth it? Salary and career
The IAPP publishes no CIPM-specific salary figure. Its Salary and Jobs Report 2025–26 found that, in general, median salary was higher for respondents holding any one IAPP qualification and higher again for those with several — while cautioning that this does not prove cause and effect. The survey is global, so it is not a US salary benchmark.
Whether the CIPM is worth it depends on your role. If you run or want to run a privacy programme, it certifies the operational side; if your work is mainly legal analysis, a CIPP in your region is the closer fit. The IAPP’s Fellow of Information Privacy designation requires an active CIPP plus a CIPM, CIPT or AIGP.
