CIPT certification: exam, cost and training

What is the CIPT certification?

CIPT stands for Certified Information Privacy Technologist. It is issued by the IAPP, the International Association of Privacy Professionals, and the IAPP says the ANAB-accredited CIPT credential proves that you understand how to use technical solutions to build data protection into products and services.

Where CIPP certifications focus on privacy law and CIPM on running a privacy programme, the CIPT certification is the one for engineers, architects, product people and data professionals: privacy by design, privacy engineering and the technical side of collecting, using and deleting data.

How much does the CIPT exam cost?

The IAPP Store lists the CIPT exam at US$550, and the member and non-member prices are the same. Once purchased, the exam must be taken within one year.

The exam fee does not include training. The IAPP’s Privacy in Technology online course is a separate purchase at US$995 for members and US$1,195 for non-members, and the official practice exam costs US$45 or US$55. After you pass, keeping CIPT active costs a US$250 certification maintenance fee per two-year term unless you are an IAPP member, in which case it is included.

The IAPP does not list a separate retake price on the exam page, so treat a second attempt as a new purchase when you budget.

CIPT exam format and what you need to pass

The CIPT exam has 90 multiple-choice questions with 2.5 hours allotted and a 15-minute break. That is a little over 1.6 minutes per question.

All core IAPP exams are scored on a scale from 100 to 500, and you pass with 300 or above. The scaled score is not a percentage, so 300 out of 500 does not mean 60% correct. Results are shown immediately at the end, unless the IAPP communicates otherwise.

Pearson VUE delivers the exam, either at a test center or as an OnVUE remote appointment from your home or office. If you do not pass, you cannot book a retake sooner than seven days after your previous attempt.

What is on the CIPT exam?

The CIPT Body of Knowledge and Exam Blueprint, version 4.0.0, has been in effect since 1 September 2025. It gives each domain a range of questions rather than a percentage. Data collection, use, dissemination and destruction carries the most, followed by privacy risk management and the privacy technologist’s role in the organisation.

Privacy by design has the fewest questions, but it runs through the other domains too, so do not treat a small range as a reason to skip it.

• Domain II — Data collection, use, dissemination and destruction: 19–23 questions
• Domain III — Privacy risk management: 17–21 questions
• Domain IV — Privacy by design: 7–9 questions

CIPT requirements and prerequisites

The IAPP Candidate Handbook lists no prerequisites for the CIPT exam: there is no experience requirement, no degree requirement and no mandatory course. You buy the exam, schedule it with Pearson VUE within a year and sit it.

The ongoing requirement comes after you pass. To keep CIPT active you must report 20 hours of continuing professional education in each two-year term and either hold IAPP membership or pay the certification maintenance fee.

CIPT training and courses from the IAPP

The IAPP calls Privacy in Technology the principal training for CIPT certification. The online version is self-paced in the MyIAPP portal, delivers the equivalent of a 13-hour live training and earns 13 CPE credits. It costs US$995 for members and US$1,195 for non-members, and the exam is not included.

The IAPP says the course is aligned with the CIPT certification programme and covers privacy by design, policy support for data and processes, and threats from areas such as AI and location tracking.

CIPT training is optional. Because there are no prerequisites, some candidates prepare with the free study guide, the Body of Knowledge and the practice exam alone; the course is most useful if the engineering or risk domains are new to you.

CIPT study guide, practice exam and CIPT questions

Start with the free resources the IAPP links on the CIPT page: a downloadable study guide that explains the exam format and includes sample questions, and the Body of Knowledge, which defines the scope.

For more CIPT questions, the IAPP sells a CIPT practice exam with 90 practice questions as a PDF, each with the correct answer and an explanation. The IAPP describes them as similar in format and content to the real exam.

Avoid “dump sites”. The Candidate Handbook states that exam questions and answers are the IAPP’s confidential property, that knowingly using illegally obtained content from dump sites breaks the non-disclosure agreement, and that sanctions can include invalidated results, a ban from future exams and revocation of existing certifications.

How do you maintain the CIPT?

The IAPP CPE Policy, version 3.3.1, requires 20 hours of continuing professional education for each certification you hold, reported within the two-year term of the certification. The term runs to the last day of the month two years after certification.

You also pay a certification maintenance fee of US$250 per term, which is included in IAPP membership. If you add CIPM or a CIPP later, each certification needs its own 20 hours.

Is the CIPT worth it? Salary and CIPT vs CIPM

The IAPP’s Salary and Jobs Report 2025-26 found that median salary was generally higher for respondents holding any one IAPP qualification, and higher again for those holding several. The IAPP adds that the results are not meant to prove cause and effect, and it gives no CIPT-specific salary figure, so neither does this page.

CIPT and CIPM have the same exam shape — 90 questions, 2.5 hours, US$550 — but test different jobs. The IAPP describes the CIPM exam as assessing the skills to establish, maintain and manage a privacy programme; CIPT is about building privacy into technology. If you design systems or handle data pipelines, CIPT is the closer fit.
