IELTS preparation courses and classes

The British Council, one of the IELTS owners, offers IELTS preparation courses both in its teaching centers and online: face-to-face courses covering all four skills with mock tests and feedback, the self-study IELTS Coach, one-to-one online tutoring and free live sessions. IELTS itself lists teacher-led courses, webinars and official apps among its preparation resources.

IELTS prep classes: in person or online?

IELTS prep classes in a teaching center suit you if you want fixed times, a teacher and classmates, and feedback on writing and speaking in person. Online classes and one-to-one tutoring give the same feedback with more flexibility. Self-study works best for candidates who are already close to their target band and mainly need practice with the format.

IELTS also lists teacher-led courses, interactive webinars and official apps for iPhone and Android among its preparation resources, and points to the preparation pages of the British Council, IDP IELTS and Cambridge English.

What a good IELTS test preparation course should include

Whichever provider you choose, an IELTS test preparation course should cover all four skills and include the things you cannot easily do alone:

  • Feedback on your writing against the four official criteria: task achievement or response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy
  • Speaking practice with a teacher in the three-part format, including the one-minute preparation for Part 2
  • Full mock tests under real timing, in the format you will take: on computer, with Writing on Paper, or IELTS Online
  • The right version: Academic or General Training, because Reading and Writing differ

IELTS General Training: the test, not a training course

IELTS General Training is one of the two IELTS versions, not a course. You choose it if you want to migrate to an English-speaking country or train or study below degree level. Listening and Speaking are the same as in Academic; Reading and Writing are different.

When you look for preparation for IELTS for General Training, make sure the course practices the General Training letter in Writing Task 1 and General Training Reading texts, not only Academic ones. A general course that only teaches Academic graphs and charts leaves out half of your Writing test.

Why General Training Reading needs its own practice

IELTS notes that a General Training Reading test usually needs more correct answers for the same band than Academic Reading. Its approximate values for General Training: 15 marks for about band 4, 23 for band 5, 30 for band 6 and 35 for band 7.

So General Training is not the easier version in scoring terms. Practice tests from the right version give you a realistic picture of your band.

Checking your readiness with or without a course

A course gives you structure and feedback; regular practice shows whether it is working. Certsqill’s IELTS questions are expert-developed, with an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per section, so you can see which skill to bring to your next class.
