What is the IELTS exam?
IELTS is an English language test for study, work and migration. Is it the International English Language Test System (IELTS)? Almost: the official name is the International English Language Testing System. It is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP IELTS and Cambridge University Press & Assessment.
What is the IELTS test in practice? An IELTS English test of all four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Many universities, employers and governments use it as an English proficiency test, so for most candidates the IELTS test is a requirement set by the organization they apply to. There is no pass or fail: you get a band score, and the organization decides which band it needs.
People also call it an IELTS English proficiency test or IELTS English proficiency exam; both mean the same IELTS exam described on this page.

What IELTS exam do you need: Academic or General Training?
IELTS offers two versions. The IELTS Academic test is for undergraduate or postgraduate study and for professional registration, for example as a doctor or nurse. General Training is for migrating to an English-speaking country or for training and study below degree level.
Listening and Speaking are the same in both versions; Reading and Writing differ. Check with your university, employer or immigration authority which one you need before you book. Because IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP IELTS and Cambridge University Press & Assessment, a British Council IELTS test is the same IELTS as one booked through IDP.

IELTS test format and IELTS questions
Listening takes about 30 minutes: four recordings, two monologues and two conversations, each played once, with 40 IELTS questions. Parts 1 and 2 are everyday, social situations; Parts 3 and 4 are educational and training situations. Reading takes 60 minutes with 40 questions: three long passages in Academic, five or six texts in three sections in General Training.
IELTS multiple choice questions are only one of the formats. Listening also uses matching, plan, map or diagram labelling, form, note, table and flow chart completion, sentence completion and short-answer questions. IELTS listening matching questions ask you to connect items in a list to what you hear, so practice following the recording and the list at the same time.
- Listening: about 30 minutes, 4 parts, 40 questions
- Reading: 60 minutes, 40 questions
- Writing: 60 minutes, Task 1 (at least 150 words) and Task 2 (at least 250 words)
- Speaking: 11 to 14 minutes, 3 parts, with an IELTS examiner

IELTS Writing: letter questions and Task 2 topics
In General Training, Writing Task 1 describes a situation and asks for a letter of at least 150 words, personal, semi-formal or formal depending on who you write to. These IELTS letter questions take about 20 minutes. In Academic, Task 1 asks you to describe visual information such as a graph, table, chart or diagram in your own words.
In Task 2 of both versions you get a point of view, argument or problem to discuss, in at least 250 words and about 40 minutes. IELTS task 2 topics are of general interest; the official General Training examples include children’s leisure activities, environmental problems and bans on smoking in public places. Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1 toward your Writing score.
IELTS writing task 2 cause and solution questions are one form of the problem prompt: you explain why something happens and what could be done. Our own illustrative example, not an official task: “Many cities have growing traffic congestion. What are the causes, and what measures could solve this problem?” For IELTS general writing questions, practice both the letter and this kind of essay under time.

IELTS Speaking: IELTS cue card sample and Part 3 questions
The Speaking test has three parts. Part 1 (4 to 5 minutes) covers familiar topics such as home, family, work, studies or interests. In Part 2 the examiner gives you a task card, often called a cue card, with a topic; you have one minute to prepare and then speak for 2 minutes. IELTS part 3 questions (4 to 5 minutes) discuss issues related to the Part 2 topic in a more general way.
An IELTS cue card sample, written by us to show the format and not taken from IELTS: “Describe a skill you learned as an adult. You should say: what the skill is, how you learned it, how long it took, and explain why it is useful to you.” Examiners assess fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation.

Is there an online IELTS exam?
Yes, for Academic only. IELTS Online lets you take the IELTS Academic test at home or in another private location, with the Speaking test by video call with an IELTS examiner. You need a laptop or desktop computer with one screen and a stable internet connection, and results arrive 6 to 8 days after the test.
Before you choose the online exam for IELTS, note the limit: IELTS Online is not accepted by governments and organizations for immigration or professional registration. It is offered in selected countries. At a test center, IELTS is taken on a computer, with a Writing on Paper option in some places.

IELTS exam fee and IELTS test costs
The IELTS exam fee depends on the country and the test center. In the United States, the British Council lists US$280 to US$340 for IELTS Academic or General Training, depending on location. As one example, the Inlingua Washington DC test center lists USD 325 for Academic or General Training on computer, and notes that prices may vary and may be subject to local tax.
IELTS test costs for One Skill Retake and for IELTS Online are not given as fixed amounts on the official pages we checked; IELTS says prices vary and to ask your local test center.

IELTS exam booking and test centers
You can book IELTS test dates online or through a test center; IELTS says it has more than 4,500 locations in over 160 countries. Use the official test center finder to locate an IELTS exam center or IELTS test center near you, then choose a date and the format: on computer, or on computer with Writing on Paper where offered.
For IELTS exam booking in the United States, the British Council asks for a valid passport, US Permanent Resident Card or US Employment Authorization Card, and you upload a scan when you book. Candidates under 18 must be registered by a parent or guardian. Your Speaking test may be on the same day as the other parts or up to a week before or after.

IELTS scores, results and retakes
Each section gets a band from 1 to 9, and the overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band. Results come 1 to 5 days after IELTS on computer. IELTS recommends that organizations treat results as valid for two years, though some accept older results.
If one section let you down, IELTS One Skill Retake lets you retake a single skill within 60 days of an IELTS on computer test, once per test, and you choose whether to use the original or the new Test Report Form.

IELTS preparation: free sample exam, mock test and IELTS books
Good IELTS preparation starts with the official material. IELTS publishes sample test questions with answers, and the British Council offers a free IELTS mock test for each of the four skills, for Academic and General Training, plus a free mock test in the computer format. The British Council says its practice exams use real IELTS questions from past papers. An IELTS sample exam from these official sources is the most reliable IELTS model test, because it shows the real question types.
Take a full mock test for IELTS under real timing early in your IELTS prep, then repeat it near test day to see your progress. For IELTS exam practice in between, work on your weakest skill. Official IELTS books from the test owners contain practice tests and advice, and IELTS lists teacher-led courses for those who want IELTS exam coaching. Any IELTS exam preparation materials you add should match the current format described above.
