What is the LSAT test?
The LSAT is the standardized admission test for law school, developed and administered by LSAC. The LSAT exam focuses on two skills law schools rely on: Logical Reasoning questions assess your ability to analyze, critically evaluate and complete arguments, and Reading Comprehension questions assess your ability to read and understand long-form, complex material similar to what you will meet in law school.
The multiple-choice portion has three scored sections and one unscored section, and the unscored section can be either question type. A separate, unscored writing task, LSAT Argumentative Writing, goes to the law schools you apply to, which examine your reasoning, clarity, organization, language usage and writing mechanics.

LSAT exam format: how many questions are on the LSAT?
The LSAT is composed of four 35-minute sections with a 10-minute intermission between the second and third. Two Logical Reasoning sections and one Reading Comprehension section are scored; the fourth is an unscored section of either type that looks exactly like the others, so treat every section as if it counts. LSAC says the test takes approximately 3 hours for standard test takers, and both the in-person and the remote LSAT are administered through LawHub.
LSAC does not publish one fixed total on the pages checked, because the count varies between test forms. As an example, the disclosed April 2025 LSAT had 25, 25 and 27 questions in its three scored sections, 77 scored questions in all. All questions on the LSAT are multiple choice, and LSAC makes no deduction for incorrect answers, so never leave a question blank.

LSAT logical reasoning questions and LSAT logic questions
Logical Reasoning makes up two of the three scored sections, so it carries the most weight. According to LSAC, these questions evaluate your ability to examine, analyze and critically evaluate arguments as they occur in ordinary language, and each one is based on a short argument drawn from a wide variety of sources.
If you search for LSAT logic questions today, this is the section you need. The logic games (Analytical Reasoning) were retired after the June 2024 test. LSAC lists these skills for Logical Reasoning:
- Recognizing the parts of an argument and their relationships
- Recognizing similarities and differences between patterns of reasoning
- Drawing well-supported conclusions
- Reasoning by analogy
- Recognizing misunderstandings or points of disagreement
- Determining how additional evidence affects an argument
- Detecting assumptions made by particular arguments
- Identifying and applying principles or rules
- Identifying flaws in arguments
- Identifying explanations

LSAT reading comprehension practice: what the section contains
A Reading Comprehension section contains four sets of reading questions. Each set is a selection of reading material followed by five to eight questions. A section includes three or four single passages and either one or no comparative reading set, which pairs two related shorter passages and asks how they relate to each other.
Passages come from the humanities, the social sciences, the biological and physical sciences and areas related to law. LSAC lists questions about the main idea or primary purpose, information that is explicitly stated, information or ideas that can be inferred, the meaning or purpose of words or phrases in context, and the organization or structure of a passage. Useful LSAT reading comprehension practice therefore means full passage sets against the 35-minute clock, not isolated questions.

LSAT Argumentative Writing and an LSAT writing sample example
In LSAT Argumentative Writing you are presented with a debatable issue and three or four perspectives that add context, and you draft an argumentative essay that takes a position on the issue. Most test takers have 50 minutes: 15 minutes for prewriting analysis and 35 minutes for the essay. The writing sample is not scored.
You can take it from eight days before your LSAT administration, and it is one of the firm requirements for the LSAT: you need a complete writing sample in your file to see your score or have it released to schools. For an official LSAT writing sample example, LSAC provides a sample prompt in LawHub’s free Official LSAT Test Prep library.

How much the LSAT costs
For the August 2026 to June 2027 testing year, LSAT registration costs $253, LSAT Argumentative Writing included, and the price is the same for first-time and repeat test takers. Applying to law school through LSAC adds the Credential Assembly Service at $219 and $45 per law school report.
Financially under-resourced U.S. and Canadian candidates can apply for an LSAC fee waiver, which also includes a one-year LawHub Advantage subscription. Optional fees such as LSAT Score Preview and test date changes are listed on our LSAT cost page.

LSAT test dates and test centers
In the 2026-2027 testing year LSAC offers the LSAT in August, September, October, November, January, February, April and June, and each U.S. administration runs over two to four days. The administrations still ahead in this cycle are November 11 to 14, 2026; January 13 to 16, 2027; February 12 to 13, 2027; April 8 to 10, 2027; and June 9 to 12, 2027. The November registration deadline was October 1, 2026; the deadline for January 2027 is December 1, 2026. LSAC notes that dates are subject to change.
Starting with the August 2026 test, LSAC requires most test takers to sit the LSAT in person at a Prometric testing center. Exceptions are limited, for example for candidates more than 180 miles or three hours’ driving time from a domestic Prometric testing center, and all remote test takers are subject to heightened security measures and real-time human proctoring.

LSAT scoring, score release and retakes
Your score is based on the number of questions you answer correctly, converted to the LSAT scale of 120 to 180. LSAC reports a percentile rank with it, showing the percentage of test takers whose scores were lower than yours during the previous three testing years. LSAC publishes no passing score on the pages checked.
Scores are released at 9 a.m. ET on the published score release date. You can cancel a score within six calendar days of your test date, and a result stays reportable for up to five testing years after the testing year in which you earned it. You may take the LSAT five times within the current reportable score period and seven times over a lifetime, and not again once you have scored 180 in that period.

LSAT preparation on LawHub: free LSAT practice tests
LSAC’s own LSAT prep resources are on LawHub. Four full four-section PrepTests are available free, which makes a free LSAT practice test on LawHub the official starting point for LSAT preparation. LawHub simulates the four-section LSAT, with tools such as ruling out answers and highlighting passages, so a LawHub LSAT practice test is as close to test day as practice gets. Because the real test is also taken on a computer through LawHub, an LSAT online practice test in that interface is worth more than a paper copy.
For free LSAT prep beyond the PrepTests, LawHub’s free library includes a sample Argumentative Writing prompt. For more full tests, LawHub Advantage gives one year of access to an extensive library of Official LSAT PrepTests for $124.
LSAC does not sell a separate diagnostic product on the pages checked. The practical free LSAT diagnostic test is one of the free PrepTests taken in full, timed, before you start studying: it shows where you stand in Logical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension.

Example LSAT test and sample LSAT exam questions
For an example LSAT test before you commit to a study plan, use LSAC’s own material. LSAC publishes 10 Logical Reasoning sample questions and four Reading Comprehension passage sets with 14 questions, described as typical of the questions you will find on the LSAT, and each comes with an explanation of the correct response and why the other choices are wrong.
That is a sample of LSAT questions, not a full test. For a complete example of an LSAT question set under real conditions, take a free PrepTest on LawHub. LSAC also publishes disclosed tests, such as the April 2025 disclosure booklet with its scored sections and a raw-to-scaled conversion table, which makes those LSAT questions and answers useful for checking your score as well as your reasoning.

How to practice for the LSAT
LSAC’s advice for LSAT prep is brief: familiarize yourself with the test’s content and interface using the official practice tests and tutorial videos on LawHub. LSAC calls previously administered LSATs the best way to prepare for test day and says most test takers benefit from additional practice tests under actual, timed conditions. In an LSAC webinar on prepping for the LSAT, an LSAC assessment specialist advised spending the most time on what you got wrong and building up from one timed section to two, three and four.
There is no single best LSAT prep for everyone. Judge LSAT prep materials and LSAT prep tools by three things: whether they match the current format with no logic games, whether they use official LSAT content (LSAC tells candidates to choose a provider that licenses it), and whether they explain every answer choice. The same test applies to LSAT preparation materials of every kind, from books to apps, and to LSAT exam prep or LSAT test prep courses.
LSAC does not offer an LSAT question of the day on the pages checked. If you want a daily habit, make your own LSAT question of day routine from logical reasoning LSAT practice questions: one short argument a day keeps the ten Logical Reasoning skills fresh between full timed tests, but daily LSAT practice does not replace full sections.
