AI-900 training and courses: what to take now that AI-901 has replaced it

Microsoft retired the AI-900 exam on 30 June 2026; the Azure AI Fundamentals certification is now earned with AI-901. Any AI-900 training you take today should therefore prepare you for AI-901 — and Microsoft’s own course has already made that switch.

Is AI-900 training still worth booking?

Only if it has been updated. The AI-900 exam can no longer be taken, so an AI-900 course that still teaches the old five-area outline prepares you for a test nobody can sit. The certification it led to, Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Fundamentals, continues — through AI-901.

The content gap is real. AI-900 described AI workloads, machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing and generative AI, each as a “describe” skill area. AI-901 has two skill areas: identifying AI concepts and capabilities (40–45%) and implementing AI solutions by using Microsoft Foundry (55–60%).

Microsoft’s official course: AI-901T00-A

The Microsoft AI-900 course people look for has a successor: Course AI-901T00-A, Introduction to AI in Azure. Microsoft lists it as a one-day, beginner-level course for the roles AI Engineer, Developer and Student, mapped to Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Fundamentals.

Microsoft says you can prepare in instructor-led training or self-paced study. The course page describes the audience as aspiring technology professionals at the beginning of their career in AI solution development, and notes that some knowledge of Python coding syntax and programming techniques is useful, along with core cloud concepts such as cloud storage, cloud compute, and cloud-based authentication and authorization.

Instructor-led or self-paced AI-900 training?

Both routes cover the same certification. Self-paced study suits you if you already write some Python and know your way around Azure, and mainly need Microsoft’s framing of AI concepts and Microsoft Foundry. A one-day instructor-led class suits you if you want the full scope at once and someone to ask — but one day is an introduction, so plan time afterwards for hands-on practice, since more than half of AI-901 is about implementing solutions.

That is the biggest change from Microsoft AI-900 training. The AI-900 exam page said data science and software engineering experience were not required; for AI-901 Microsoft expects knowledge of Python coding syntax and familiarity with Azure resources.

How to judge any other AI-900 course

Plenty of courses still carry the AI-900 name. Before paying for one, check three things:

  • It is built on the AI-901 study guide (skills measured as of 15 April 2026), not the retired AI-900 outline.
  • It gives real time to Microsoft Foundry, which carries 55–60% of the exam.
  • It includes hands-on work in Python and Azure, not only slides and definitions.

Free tools to use alongside a course

The AI-901 exam page links two tools from Microsoft. A practice assessment on AI Skills Navigator, which you launch after signing in, and an exam sandbox that demonstrates the exam experience. Neither is a course, but both tell you whether your training has covered the style and scope Microsoft tests.

Certsqill’s practice questions for this certification are expert-developed, and every question explains each answer option.

Is AI-900 training required before the exam?

No. Microsoft requires no course. It does expect Python basics and familiarity with Azure resources for AI-901. Source: Microsoft Learn, checked 8 October 2026.

Can I still use an old AI-900 course?

Only partly. AI-901 gives 55–60% to implementing AI solutions with Microsoft Foundry, which the AI-900 outline did not have as its own skill area. Source: Microsoft AI-901 study guide, checked 8 October 2026.

Does Microsoft offer practice for AI-901?

Yes: a practice assessment on AI Skills Navigator and an exam sandbox, both linked from the AI-901 exam page. Source: Microsoft Learn, checked 9 October 2026.
