The NREMT exam: questions, passing score and scheduling
How many questions are on the NREMT exam depends on your level: the EMT exam has 70 to 120 items in 2 hours, the paramedic exam 110 to 150 questions in 3 hours 30 minutes. Both are computer adaptive, so the length varies, but the passing standard does not: a score of 950 on a scale from 100 to 1500.

How many questions are on the NREMT exam?
The EMR, EMT and paramedic exams are computer adaptive: the number and difficulty of items vary for each session, between a published minimum and maximum, while the passing standard stays the same. Every exam also contains unscored pilot items, and you cannot tell which ones they are.
- EMR: 90 to 110 items, 30 of them unscored
- EMT: 70 to 120 items, 10 of them unscored
- AEMT: 135 questions, 35 of them unscored
- Paramedic: 110 to 150 questions, 20 of them unscored

How long is the NREMT exam?
How long is the NREMT test at each level: 1 hour 45 minutes for EMR, 2 hours for EMT, 2 hours 15 minutes for AEMT and 3 hours 30 minutes for Paramedic. The EMR and EMT exams are delivered at Pearson VUE test centers or remotely through OnVUE.
Because the EMT exam is adaptive, two candidates can sit the same 2-hour exam and see a different number of items. Plan your pace for the maximum, not the minimum.

What score do you need to pass the NREMT?
The passing score for NREMT exams is a 950 on a scale from 100 to 1500, at every level. Because the exams are adaptive, the number and difficulty of items differ for each candidate, but the passing standard remains the same for all.
So what score do you need to pass NREMT exams in percent? There is no NREMT passing score percentage. The National Registry states that there is no minimum percentage of correct questions needed to pass a CAT exam: what counts is whether your ability, measured across the items you saw, is above the standard.

Your NREMT score and results
How long the NREMT review of your exam takes depends on your level. Results post to your National Registry account, not at the test center: for EMTs they usually arrive within two business days, for paramedics within three business days. If nothing has posted after five business days, contact the National Registry.
If you pass, you do not receive a detailed NREMT score. If you do not pass, you see your score on the 100 to 1500 scale and a graphic showing how far you were from the passing point, which helps you plan the retake.

NREMT pass rate
The National Registry publishes the national percent passing per year. In 2025 it was 73% for EMR, 80% for EMT, 70% for AEMT and 82% for Paramedic, up from 69%, 74%, 67% and 79% in 2024. The page does not say whether these are first-attempt or cumulative figures.
First-attempt and third-attempt pass rates are available only as interactive state-by-state reports, so we do not quote them here.

NREMT exam dates 2026 and how to schedule
There are no fixed NREMT exam dates in 2026. Once your application is complete, the National Registry issues an Authorization to Test (ATT), valid up to 90 days from the day it posts to your account. Within that window you schedule the NREMT exam with Pearson VUE, at a test center or online.
Changes must be made at least one business day (24 hours) before your appointment. If you do not pass, you can test again after 15 days; EMT and paramedic candidates have six attempts, EMR candidates three.

Practising for the adaptive format
Each item on an adaptive exam is chosen based on how you answered the previous ones, so weak domains surface quickly. Certsqill’s NREMT question bank has expert-developed questions, an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per domain.
