The NALA paralegal exam study guide PDF: what NALA actually publishes
If you are searching for a NALA paralegal exam study guide PDF, the official documents are the CP Exam Specifications and NALA’s exam FAQs, both published as PDFs. The specifications outline the content areas of the exam and their weighted point values; the FAQs explain eligibility, testing and results.
NALA lists suggested sources for study on its website, but its Certifying Board does not require, approve, endorse or recommend any specific study materials, and candidates are not required to buy any of them. The Board also has no involvement with the NALA online study group.

Paralegal study for the Knowledge Exam
The Knowledge Exam is three hours of multiple-choice questions worth 100 points across ten areas. Paralegal study for this part is mostly breadth: the U.S. legal system and civil litigation together are 30 points, professional and ethical responsibility is 12, and contracts, corporate and commercial law and torts are 10 each.
Build your plan from the point values. Spend the most time on the largest areas, but do not skip debtor/creditor and bankruptcy (6) or criminal law and estate planning (7 each): every area appears on the exam.

Preparing for the Skills Exam essay
The Skills Exam is a two-hour written essay worth 30 points: 10 for legal writing (composition 7, mechanics 3) and 20 for critical thinking (relevant facts 4, issue spotting 7, analysis of facts and rules 7, drawing conclusions 2).
NALA’s graders look at whether you identify the relevant facts and state them concisely and accurately, identify the main issue and any secondary issues, identify the relevant legal authority and apply it to the facts, and draw persuasive, logical conclusions. Practise writing to that structure under a two-hour limit.

Choosing a paralegal book
For CP preparation, a paralegal book is useful only if it covers the ten Knowledge Exam areas in the specifications and offers practice for the essay. Check the table of contents against NALA’s list before you buy, and check that the edition reflects current law in areas such as ethics and civil procedure.
If you study to be a paralegal rather than for the exam, your school’s course materials come first; the CP specifications are still a good map of what a working paralegal is expected to know nationally.
