Paralegal certificate programs, courses and classes

Paralegal certificate programs are run by colleges and schools; they award a certificate, not a certification. If you also want the NALA Certified Paralegal credential, choose a program that fits NALA’s eligibility rules, for example an ABA approved program, a post-baccalaureate certificate program in paralegal studies, or a program of at least 60 semester hours with 15 in substantive legal courses.

Paralegal certificate programs vs. paralegal certification programs

A school’s paralegal certificate program ends with a certificate of completion. NALA points out that this is not the same as earning professional certification from a body such as NALA, which requires passing its exam.

If a school calls its offering a paralegal certification program, what you receive at the end is still a school certificate. Treat the program as education, and the CP exam as the separate step that leads to certification.

ABA approved paralegal certificate programs

The American Bar Association approves paralegal education programs through the Approval Commission of its Standing Committee on Paralegals, which sets the standards for paralegal education. The ABA’s directory of approved programs lists 222 programs.

Searching for ABA approved paralegal certification programs leads to the same thing: the ABA page we checked describes approval of education programs, not an ABA certification exam. Graduating from an ABA approved program is one of the routes into the NALA CP exam under Category 1.

Which paralegal courses qualify you for the CP exam

NALA’s Category 1 accepts enrollment in or graduation from a paralegal or legal studies program that meets one of five criteria. If you already hold a bachelor’s degree in another field, Category 2 lets you qualify with at least 15 semester hours of substantive paralegal courses instead of a full program, or with one year of paralegal experience.

  • A paralegal program approved by the American Bar Association
  • An associate degree program in paralegal studies
  • A post-baccalaureate certificate program in paralegal studies
  • A bachelor’s degree program in paralegal studies
  • A paralegal program of at least 60 semester hours, of which at least 15 are substantive legal courses

Online paralegal certificate programs and online paralegal courses

The ABA paralegal page we checked says nothing about online delivery. If you are looking at ABA approved online paralegal certificate programs, find the program in the ABA directory and ask the school whether its approval covers the online format you would study in.

NALA’s eligibility wording that we checked describes programs by type and semester hours and does not mention whether classes are online or on campus. For online paralegal courses or a paralegal class online taken outside a full program, the useful question is whether they count as substantive paralegal semester hours toward Category 2.

How long is the paralegal course?

There is no single answer, because each school sets the length of its own paralegal courses and certificate programs, and the ABA page we checked does not set a duration. NALA’s rules give you a yardstick in credit rather than in weeks: 15 semester hours of substantive paralegal courses for the Category 2 route, or 60 semester hours with 15 substantive legal hours for a full program under Category 1.

When you compare a paralegal studies certificate program by length, compare its credit hours with these numbers too.

Paralegal classes after you are certified

Courses do not stop with the exam. To keep the CP, NALA requires 50 hours of continuing legal education in each five-year period, including five hours of legal ethics and no more than 10 hours of non-substantive credit. NFPA states that its own CLEs are approved for renewing its credentials.

Choose paralegal classes that fit your practice area, since substantive legal topics make up most of the required hours.

Checking your readiness after the course

A course teaches the material; practice questions show whether you can apply it under exam conditions. Certsqill’s Paralegal question bank is expert-developed, follows the ten content areas of NALA’s Knowledge Exam and gives you an explanation for every answer option and a readiness score per area.
