PL-300 study guide: exam prep built on Microsoft’s skills measured
Good PL-300 exam prep starts from Microsoft’s own study guide. It lists every skill measured as of 20 April 2026 across four areas — prepare the data, model the data, visualize and analyze the data (25–30% each) and manage and secure Power BI (15–20%) — and sets the pass mark at 700 or greater. This page turns that outline into a study plan.

Start with Microsoft’s study guide
Microsoft’s study guide for Exam PL-300 is the syllabus. It describes the candidate as someone who delivers actionable insights from data, works with business stakeholders on requirements, and collaborates with analytics and data engineers — and it states that you should be proficient in Power Query and Data Analysis Expressions (DAX).
That last sentence sets the level. PL-300 is not a test of clicking through report menus; it expects working fluency in transforming data with Power Query and writing DAX measures. If either is new to you, plan for it first.

PL-300 exam preparation, area by area
Microsoft breaks each area into sub-skills. The ones below are taken from the skills measured; use them as a checklist and mark each as known, shaky or new.
- Prepare the data (25–30%): connecting to sources or a shared semantic model, credentials and privacy levels, choosing between DirectLake, DirectQuery and Import, parameters, profiling and cleaning data, resolving import errors, pivoting and unpivoting, merging and appending queries, building fact and dimension tables, and keys for relationships.
- Model the data (25–30%): table and column properties, role-playing dimensions, cardinality and cross-filter direction, a common date table, calculated columns and tables, DAX measures including CALCULATE, time intelligence, semi-additive measures, quick measures and calculation groups, plus performance work with Performance Analyzer and DAX query view.
- Visualize and analyze the data (25–30%): choosing and formatting visuals, themes, conditional formatting, slicing and filtering, paginated reports, visual calculations, bookmarks, tooltips, drillthrough, sync slicers, mobile and accessible design, and Copilot tasks — a narrative visual, a new report page, suggested content and a semantic model summary — alongside the Analyze feature, clustering, AI visuals, forecasting and outlier detection.
- Manage and secure Power BI (15–20%): workspaces, apps, distribution methods, dashboards, subscriptions and data alerts, promoting or certifying content, gateways, scheduled refresh, workspace roles, item-level access, access to semantic models, row-level security roles and group membership, and sensitivity labels.

Where PL-300 candidates lose marks
The weightings are ranges, so no area is safe to skip — and the smallest one is the usual trap. Manage and secure Power BI is 15–20% of the exam, but analysts who only build reports in Power BI Desktop may never have configured row-level security group membership, a gateway or a sensitivity label. Treat it as a full topic, not an afterthought.
The second trap is the outline’s age. The skills measured were updated on 20 April 2026 and now include Copilot tasks and DirectLake. Study material written against an older outline will not cover them.
The third is scoring. Microsoft reports a scaled score and requires 700 or greater; that is not 70% of questions correct, so a percentage from any practice set is a rough signal rather than a prediction.

A practical PL-300 exam prep plan
A plan that follows the outline rather than a textbook usually works best:
- Week one: work through the checklist above and rate every sub-skill honestly. Your gaps decide the rest of the plan.
- Core weeks: study the shaky and new sub-skills in Power BI itself — build the model, write the measures, configure the security — rather than only reading about them.
- Mid-point: take Microsoft’s free practice assessment from the certification page to see the style, wording and difficulty, and to find weak areas you missed.
- Final week: try the exam sandbox so the question types and interface hold no surprises, revisit the weakest area, and confirm your booking details.

Official study resources
The study guide links its own resources: self-paced learning paths and modules or an instructor-led course, the Power BI documentation, Microsoft Q&A for questions, Power Platform community forums, and Exam Readiness Zone videos. The certification page adds the free practice assessment and the exam sandbox.
One thing not to use: brain dumps. Microsoft defines them as exam content obtained fraudulently and states that using them to prepare constitutes cheating, with possible consequences including revoked certifications and bans from the program.

Exam day facts to plan around
The exam runs 100 minutes and is proctored, online or at a test centre. Microsoft does not publish a question count. If you do not pass, Microsoft allows a retake 24 hours after the first attempt, with varying waits for later retakes. Once certified, you renew every 12 months through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn — so what you learn now keeps paying off.
