Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate training — the two official routes

Microsoft’s course page puts it simply: “You can prepare in instructor-led training or self-paced study.” Both routes lead to the same PL-300 exam — 100 minutes, a passing score of 700 or greater — and the same certification. Microsoft lists no enforced prerequisite, so a course is a choice, not an entry condition.

The self-paced route is free Microsoft Power BI data analyst training on Microsoft Learn: the learning paths and modules that the certification page links under “Start course”. The instructor-led route is the Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate course, PL-300T00, described in the next section.

The official PL-300 course: PL-300T00

The instructor-led Microsoft PL-300 course is PL-300T00, “Design and manage analytics solutions using Power BI”. Microsoft lists it as three days at Intermediate level, for data and business intelligence professionals who want to perform data analysis accurately with Power BI, and for people who build reports on data from cloud and on-premises platforms.

Microsoft does not run the classes itself; the course page has a “Search for a training provider” section. That makes PL-300T00 the closest thing to a standard Microsoft Power BI data analyst course — the outline is Microsoft’s, while price, schedule and delivery depend on the provider you choose.

Free Power BI certification training: what is free and what is not

Searches for a free Power BI certification mix up two things. The training can be free: Microsoft’s training FAQ states that “Microsoft Learn training is free and available to anyone who has an interest to learn about Microsoft products.” The practice assessment on the certification page is free too, and so is the yearly renewal assessment.

The certification itself is not free. Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate requires passing PL-300, and the exam is paid, priced by the country or region in which it is proctored. So “Power BI certification free” is half true: you can prepare for nothing, but the exam fee remains unless an employer, event or programme gives you a voucher.

Microsoft Learn rewards progress along the way — a badge for each finished module and a trophy for each finished learning path, shown on your Learn profile. They are learning milestones, not a Microsoft Power BI certification free of charge.

Power BI certification online: training and exam from home

You can do the whole Power BI certification online. Microsoft Learn’s self-paced modules are web-based, PL-300T00 is delivered by training providers — ask each one about its format — and the exam itself can be taken as an online proctored exam through Pearson VUE.

For the exam, Microsoft notes that online proctoring lets you test almost anywhere, but you are responsible for making sure your computer and exam area meet its security standards; you run a system pre-check before registering. A test centre is the alternative if you prefer a pre-configured room. A Microsoft Power BI certification online is the same credential as one earned at a test centre.

Choosing a Power BI certification course online or in a classroom

Power BI certification courses differ more in what they include than in what they teach. Before paying for a Power BI certification course online or in a classroom, check:

• Currency: does it follow the skills measured as of 20 April 2026, including the Copilot tasks and the choice between DirectLake, DirectQuery and Import?
• Coverage: does it give real time to “Manage and secure Power BI” (15–20% of the exam) — workspace roles, row-level security, gateways, sensitivity labels — or only to report design?
• Depth: the study guide expects proficiency in Power Query and DAX, including CALCULATE, time intelligence and calculation groups. A course that stays at drag-and-drop level will leave gaps.
• Exam fit: is a voucher included, or do you pay the exam separately at Microsoft’s regional price?
• Practice: does it include timed practice under exam conditions, in addition to Microsoft’s free practice assessment?

What makes the best Power BI certification course

There is no official ranking of providers, so the best Power BI certification course is the one that matches the syllabus and your gaps. If you already build reports daily, free self-paced study plus targeted DAX and administration practice may be enough. If you are new to data modelling, structured Microsoft Power BI certification training with an instructor — such as PL-300T00 — can save time.

Be wary of any Power BI certification program that promises the certificate itself. Only Microsoft issues the credential, and only after you pass PL-300; a course can prepare you for that, not replace it.

Free PL-300 mock test options

The official free option is Microsoft’s practice assessment, linked from the certification page as “Take the practice assessment”. Microsoft says it shows the style, wording and difficulty of the questions and helps you find where more preparation is needed. The exam sandbox complements it: it lets you try the different question types in the same interface you will use on exam day.
