PTCB requirements for certification and renewal
To get PTCB certification as a CPhT you need to live in the U.S. or its territories, complete a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program or 500 hours of pharmacy technician work, and pass the PTCE. To keep it, you recertify every two years with at least 20 hours of continuing education, including 1 hour of pharmacy law and 1 hour of patient safety.

How to get PTCB certification: the two pathways
The PTCB certification requirements give you two routes to eligibility. Choose one:
- Pathway 1: complete a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program, or be within 60 days of completing one when you apply. A pharmacy degree can substitute for the program.
- Pathway 2: at least 500 hours of work experience as a pharmacy technician, all completed at the time you apply.

PTCB exam requirements
Beyond the pathway, the PTCB requirements for certification include residence in the United States or its territories and full disclosure of all criminal actions and State Board of Pharmacy registration or licensure actions. You apply in your PTCB account and pay $129, which covers the application and the exam.
These are the PTCB test requirements listed on PTCB’s CPhT pages. Your state may add its own: PTCB states that the legal scope of practice for CPhTs is defined by each State Board of Pharmacy, so check your board’s rules on registration or licensure as well.

PTCB recertification requirements
The PTCB certification renewal requirements apply every two years. You can apply 60 days before your certification expires, and the application deadline is 11:59 PM ET on the first day of your expiration month; after that, a $25 late fee applies. The recertification fee is $55. You also need an NABP e-Profile ID to recertify.

PTCB CE requirements for pharmacy technicians
The PTCB renewal CE requirements: at least 20 hours of continuing education per two-year cycle, earned within that cycle and after you were certified. Hours do not carry over to the next cycle.
- 1 hour must be in pharmacy law and 1 hour in patient safety
- At least 15 hours must be technician-specific (ACPE "T" designation)
- At most 5 hours may come from pharmacist-specific ("P") ACPE programs, if the topic is in the PTCE Content Outline
- College courses can count for up to 10 hours (3 academic credit hours, grade C or better)
- Keep your CE records for at least a year after the cycle ends; PTCB audits at random
