What is PTCB certification?
PTCB pharmacy technician certification means the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential. To become Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) certified, you meet one of two eligibility pathways and pass the PTCE. At the end of 2025, PTCB counted 313,556 active CPhTs.
It is a national certification, not a license. PTCB states that the legal scope of practice for CPhTs is defined by individual State Boards of Pharmacy, so whether you also need a state registration or license depends on your state. If you search for a PTCB license, what you earn from PTCB is the CPhT certification; licensing is your state board’s decision.

What is on the PTCB exam?
The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam follows the PTCE Content Outline that took effect on 6 January 2026. It has four knowledge domains:
- Medications: 35% (drug names and classes, interactions, dosage forms, side effects, indications, stability, storage)
- Federal Requirements: 18.75% (controlled substances and DEA schedules, restricted drug programs, FDA recalls, DSCSA)
- Patient Safety and Quality Assurance: 23.75% (high-alert and look-alike/sound-alike drugs, error prevention, infection prevention)
- Order Entry and Processing: 22.50% (formulas, calculations and Sig codes, supplies, lot numbers, NDC numbers)

PTCB exam format
The PTCB exam is computer-based: 90 multiple-choice questions, of which 80 are scored and 10 are unscored. The appointment takes 2 hours: a 5-minute tutorial, the 1 hour 50 minute exam and a 5-minute survey.
You take the PTCB test at a Pearson VUE test center under a live proctor. PTCB says the exam is administered year-round at more than 1,400 Pearson Professional Centers nationwide.

PTCB exam cost
The PTCB exam cost is $129. That single fee covers the CPhT application and the PTCE, so the PTCB certification cost and the PTCB test cost are the same $129 for each attempt; you apply and pay again for a retake.
Official practice is separate: the Pre-PTCE costs $29 per exam and the PTCE Practice Bank $65.

Eligibility: who can take the PTCB exam
You must reside in the United States or its territories and meet one pathway: complete a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program (or be within 60 days of completing one), or have at least 500 hours of work experience as a pharmacy technician, completed when you apply. You must also fully disclose criminal and State Board of Pharmacy actions.
The details of both pathways, and of renewal, are on the Requirements page.

How to schedule the PTCB exam
You apply in your PTCB account. Once you are authorized, you schedule the PTCB exam in your account or by phone with Pearson VUE. There are no fixed PTCB exam dates: the exam runs year-round, so your PTCB exam schedule depends on open seats at your chosen center.
Rescheduling or cancelling a test center appointment is free if done at least 24 hours before it. If you do not show up, all fees are forfeited.

Is the PTCB exam hard?
PTCB reports a 2025 pass rate of 69% for the CPhT. So is PTCB exam hard? About three in ten candidates did not pass in 2025, which makes preparation worth planning.
The difficulty is set by the standard, not by other candidates: PTCB reports results as a scaled score, and you need 1,400. Scoring, results and retake rules are explained in detail on the Exam page.

Official PTCB practice tools
PTCB offers two official PTCB practice tools. The PTCB practice bank (PTCE Practice Bank, $65) has 300+ former PTCE questions and a 400-flashcard deck; you can set length and difficulty, choose timed or untimed sessions and focus on topics such as calculations, which makes it useful for PTCB math practice.
The Pre-PTCE ($29 per exam) is a PTCB practice exam with former exam questions and the look and feel of the real test. It shows explanations after you submit your answers and before you see a score. PTCB advises against taking it several times, because there is only one form.

Free PTCB practice test options
If you are looking for a free PTCB practice test 2026 or a PTCB 90 question practice test free of charge: PTCB does not list a free practice test or free PTCB test questions on its practice tools page. Its official practice tools are paid.
What PTCB does provide free are the PTCE Content Outline and the 2026 CPhT Knowledge Reference as PDFs. A PTCB practice test and answers PDF is not among PTCB’s published resources on the pages we checked, so treat any free file that claims to contain real exam items with caution.

PTCB courses and PTCB certification online
A PTCB course in the formal sense is a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program, one of the two eligibility pathways. PTCB’s directory notes that programs available in your state may be listed under Online/Distance Learning, so an online PTCB course can count if it is recognized.
For PTCB certification online, you apply through your PTCB account; the CPhT page describes the exam itself at a Pearson test center. PTCB does not endorse, recommend or sponsor any review course, manual or book.

How to prepare for PTCB exam day
How to prepare for PTCB exam success: start from the Content Outline weights. Medications is 35% of the exam, so drug names, classes and interactions come first; federal requirements (18.75%) is the smallest domain but very rule-based. Calculations appear across all four domains, marked in the outline.
Good PTCB exam prep mixes content review with timed practice: 90 questions in 110 minutes leaves a little over a minute per question. Detailed study advice is on the Study guide page.

PTCB practice questions
Certsqill’s PTCB practice questions are expert-developed and mapped to the four PTCE domains. Use them as PTCB prep alongside the official tools, as PTCB sample questions by domain or as a timed PTCB practice test 2026 under exam conditions.
Every one of the PTCB questions comes with an explanation for each answer option, and your results build a readiness score per domain, so you see which PTCB exam questions still trip you up. A 7-day money-back guarantee applies.
