How many questions is the Series 65?

The exam has 140 multiple-choice questions. FINRA and NASAA count 130 of them toward your score; the other 10 are unscored pretest questions that NASAA is trialing. Give every question the same care.

The Series 65 topics fall into four sections in NASAA’s study guide: Economic Factors and Business Information, Investment Vehicle Characteristics, Client Investment Recommendations and Strategies, and Laws, Regulations and Guidelines, Including Prohibition on Unethical Business Practices.

How long is the Series 65 exam?

You have 180 minutes, and the exam is closed book. Scratch paper is available from the proctor on request. Asked another way, how long is Series 65 exam time per question? Spread evenly over 140 questions, 180 minutes gives you about 77 seconds each, by our calculation.

Pace yourself so one slow question early on does not cost you the last ones, and practice under the same limit before test day.

Series 65 passing score

To pass you must answer at least 92 of the 130 scored questions correctly. NASAA is explicit that the Series 65 pass score is not 70% and is not calculated as a percentage, and that the parts of the exam are weighted differently, so you cannot work out your overall grade by averaging section scores.

You find out whether you passed as soon as you finish. If you fail, the result shows your score in each of the four sections, never your answers to individual questions.

Series 65 pass rate

NASAA and FINRA do not publish a pass rate for Series 65 candidates on any of the pages we checked. That includes the often-searched first-time pass rate. Any Series 65 passing rate quoted online comes from a third party, not from the exam owner, and we do not repeat unofficial figures here.

The only official benchmark is the passing score itself, which is why our practice results are measured against 92 of 130.

Series 65 exam registration

There are two ways to register for Series 65 exam enrollment. If you work for a firm, your employer files Form U4 through CRD to request the exam. If you are not with a firm, you do not need a sponsor: NASAA confirms that unsponsored candidates can open an enrollment window via FINRA and pay the $187 fee themselves, using FINRA’s test enrollment system for NASAA exams.

Once you register for Series 65, FINRA opens a 120-day window. Your Series 65 registration with a state is a separate step that comes after you pass, and you have two years for it before the exam expires.

Series 65 exam schedule and test dates

There are no fixed Series 65 test dates. Scheduling Series 65 exam appointments happens through Prometric, online or by phone at (800) 578-6273, any time within your 120-day window, subject to availability at your test center.

FINRA advises booking as far in advance as possible to get the date you want, and notes that rescheduling fees may apply. The exam is offered online only to candidates with an approved testing accommodation.

If you do not pass the Series 65

You must wait at least 30 days before a second attempt and another 30 days before a third. After a third failure the wait is 180 days; NASAA has announced that from January 4, 2027 this drops to 60 days, but windows opened before that date keep the old rule. Waiting periods count failed attempts within a two-year period.

Use the section scores on your result to plan the retake. To pass the Series 65 the second time, rebuild the weakest section first, then return to full-length timed practice.
