The NASAA Series 65 study guide
NASAA publishes a Series 65 study guide dated September 1, 2023, alongside a separate outline of topic weights. It is publicly available on nasaa.org, so the free Series 65 study material that matters most is the one from the organization that writes the exam.
The guide lists each subtopic you can be tested on, from basic economic concepts and financial reporting through capital market theory, retirement plans and ERISA, to state and federal regulation of advisers and fiduciary obligations. For the law section, it names the Uniform Securities Act of 1956 as amended by NASAA and states that the 2002 version is not tested.

Two sections carry 60% of the 130 scored questions. Spend your study time for Series 65 in proportion:

Series 65 exam study materials: how to choose
NASAA says candidates are responsible for their own course of study. It keeps a list of study material vendors but does not endorse any of them, so there is no official best study material for Series 65. Use these checks for any Series 65 license study materials you consider:

Series 65 books and flashcards
Series 65 books help most with the quantitative and product-heavy parts of the outline: financial reporting, analytical methods, valuation of fixed income and equity securities, and portfolio performance measures. Check that the edition matches the June 2023 specifications.

How long to study for Series 65
NASAA and FINRA do not publish a recommended Series 65 study time. How long does it take to study for Series 65 depends on how much of the outline you already know from work or from other exams, so any fixed number of hours is an estimate rather than an official figure.
Measure instead of guessing: after working through all four sections, take full practice exams of 140 questions in 180 minutes. When you clear 92 of 130 consistently and no section lags, you are ready to book.

NASAA has updated Series 63, 65 and 66 questions to reflect the SEC’s Investment Adviser Marketing Rule, and it has announced further question updates for early 2027 following model rule amendments adopted in May 2026, with the exact date still to come.
