How many questions is the Series 66?

The exam has 110 multiple-choice questions. A common point of confusion behind searches for how many questions on Series 66: the total is 110, but only 100 are scored. The other 10 are unscored pretest questions, so treat every question as if it counts.

The Series 66 topics behind the 100 scored questions are split by NASAA into four areas: economic factors (8), investment vehicles (17), client recommendations and strategies (30) and laws, regulations and ethics (45).

How long is the Series 66 exam?

You have 150 minutes for all 110 questions, which by our calculation is just under 82 seconds per question. The exam is closed book. Pace yourself so that one slow question early on does not cost you the last ones, and practice under the same limit before test day.

Series 66 passing score

You must answer at least 73 of the 100 scored questions correctly. NASAA set this Series 66 pass score when it introduced new test specifications in 2016, and the same 73 out of 100 applies under the current specifications in effect since June 12, 2023.

NASAA notes that the passing score is based on the overall exam and that the sections are weighted differently, so you cannot work out your result by averaging section scores. You are told your result immediately when you finish.

Series 66 pass rate

NASAA and FINRA do not publish a pass rate of Series 66 candidates on any of the pages we checked: not overall, not for first-time takers and not by year. Any Series 66 exam pass rate you read elsewhere, including figures attributed to particular firms, is not an official number, and we do not repeat it here.

The official benchmark is the passing score. That is why our readiness scores measure you against 73 of 100.

Series 66 exam registration

If you work for a firm, your employer files Form U4 through CRD to request the exam. If you are not with a firm, NASAA confirms you can open an enrollment window through FINRA and pay the $177 fee yourself, without a sponsor.

Series 66 registration with a state is a separate step after you pass. FINRA lists the SIE and Series 7 as corequisites; you may take the Series 7 or the Series 66 first, but you need both before you apply to register, and you have two years after passing before the exam expires.

Series 66 exam schedule and exam dates

There are no fixed Series 66 exam dates. Once you are enrolled, FINRA opens a 120-day window, and you schedule your Series 66 appointment with Prometric, online or by phone at (800) 578-6273, at a test center with available slots.

To schedule Series 66 for the date you want, book as early as possible: FINRA notes that availability varies by test center and that rescheduling fees may apply. The exam is offered online only to candidates with an approved testing accommodation.

Retaking the Series 66

After a failed attempt you must wait at least 30 days before the second and third attempts, and 180 days after a third failure. NASAA has announced that from January 4, 2027 the wait after a third failure drops to 60 days for windows opened from that date. Waiting periods count failed attempts within a two-year period.
