Series 66 study guide: official outline, study materials and study time
The official Series 66 exam study guide is NASAA’s own PDF: it lists the four tested sections, their weights and every subtopic, but no practice questions. Because 45% of the scored questions are on laws, regulations and ethics, a good Series 66 study plan puts that section first and ends with timed practice exams.

The NASAA Series 66 study guide PDF
NASAA publishes a Series 66 study guide PDF dated September 1, 2023, linked from its Exam Study Guides page and publicly available on nasaa.org. It is the only Series 66 study guide written by the organization that writes the exam.
The guide covers the whole outline in detail: analytical methods in economics; fixed income valuation, pooled investments, futures and options, alternative investments and insurance based products; client profiles, capital market theory, taxes, retirement plans and performance measures; and, in the law section, the regulation of advisers, broker-dealers and their representatives, communication with clients and fiduciary obligations.

- Investment Vehicle Characteristics: 17% (17 questions)

Series 66 exam study materials: how to choose
NASAA says candidates are responsible for their own course of study and that it does not endorse any third-party preparation services; it keeps a list of vendors without recommending any. So there is no official best Series 66 study material. Check any study material for Series 66 against these points:
- Updated for the test specifications that took effect on June 12, 2023.
- Built around NASAA’s four sections, with the law and ethics section covered in full depth.
- Covers every subtopic listed in NASAA’s guide.
- Includes timed practice with explanations, because NASAA’s guide contains no questions.

Series 66 books and flashcards
Series 66 books are best for the first pass through the recommendations and law sections, which together carry 75 of the 100 scored questions. Check the edition against the June 2023 specifications before you buy.
Series 66 flashcards suit the law section: the regulation of advisers, broker-dealers and their representatives, and the categories of state-registered and federal covered advisers. Cards made from your own wrong answers are more useful than a generic deck.

How long to study for Series 66
NASAA and FINRA do not publish a recommended study time, so any fixed answer to how many hours to study for Series 66 is an estimate, not an official figure. How long does it take to study for Series 66 for you depends on how much of the outline you already know.
Use a measurable finish line instead: after working through all four sections, take full practice exams of 110 questions in 150 minutes. When you clear 73 of 100 consistently and the law section is no longer your weakest, book the exam.

Keep your Series 66 study current
NASAA has updated Series 63, 65 and 66 questions to reflect the SEC’s Investment Adviser Marketing Rule, and it has announced further question updates for early 2027 after model rule amendments adopted in May 2026, with the exact date to come. Check NASAA’s Exams page close to your test date.
Remember what the result is worth: NASAA notes that passing the Series 66 qualifies you as if you had passed both the Series 63 and Series 65, so the study effort covers two state exams at once.
