SHRM-SCP study guide: how to prepare for the exam
The foundation of any SHRM-SCP study guide is SHRM’s own blueprint, the BASK: six clusters, from leadership and people at 19% each to workplace at 13%. Half the exam tests behavioural competencies, half HR knowledge, and 54 of the 134 questions are situational judgment items. Study by those weights, start with SHRM’s free retired exam items, and practise at the real pace of two 110-minute sections.

How many questions are on the SHRM-SCP exam?
The SHRM-SCP has 134 multiple-choice questions: 80 stand-alone knowledge questions and 54 situational judgment items. Twenty-four of the 134 are unscored field-test items, mixed in at random. The testing time is split into two independently timed sections of up to 110 minutes each, and unused minutes from the first section do not carry over.
That structure matters for your SHRM-SCP exam prep: 220 minutes for 134 questions is about 1 minute 38 seconds per question on average, but situational judgment items take longer to read than knowledge questions, so practise both types under time pressure.

Build your SHRM-SCP study guide on the BASK
SHRM calls the BASK — the SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge — the blueprint for both of its exams. It names nine behavioural competencies and 14 HR functional areas, grouped into six clusters with fixed weights:

A SHRM-SCP study plan by weight
SHRM does not publish recommended study hours, so plan in proportions. Leadership, people and organisation together carry 56% of the exam. Business and interpersonal account for 31%, workplace for 13%.
The 54 situational judgment items ask for the best course of action in a scenario, not just a correct fact. After each cluster, work through scenario questions and check not only the right answer but why the second-best option is weaker. Finish with full-length timed practice across both sections.

SHRM-SCP study materials from SHRM
SHRM’s main SHRM-SCP study material is the SHRM Certification Prep System, available as self-study, instructor-led or for teams. SHRM advertises more than 2,700 practice questions in it and says it features questions previously used on actual SHRM exams. Add-ons include the Ace Your Certification Exam Study Guide and SHRM-SCP workbooks, and SHRM offers a free demo.
For live teaching, SHRM Certification Prep+ is offered year-round in classroom, virtual and hybrid formats. SHRM also claims that candidates using the BASK and the Prep System are 44% more likely to pass the SHRM-SCP; it gives no method for that figure, so treat it as a marketing claim. Whatever SHRM-SCP study materials you choose, the BASK defines the scope.

SHRM-SCP sample questions from SHRM
SHRM publishes SHRM-SCP sample questions on its own site, described as “a few real, retired exam items”. They are the most authentic guide to question style you will find, because they were once live exam questions. SHRM does not say how many there are.
Use them early, before other SHRM-SCP practice questions, to calibrate: notice how the situational judgment items present a workplace scenario and several possible actions, and work out why the keyed answer is the best one before moving on.

SHRM-SCP practice tests and practice exams
A useful SHRM-SCP practice test mirrors the real exam: knowledge and situational judgment items in roughly the real ratio, weighted by the BASK clusters, under the 110-minute section limits. Take shorter SHRM-SCP practice tests after each cluster, then at least one full-length SHRM-SCP practice exam under exam conditions before your testing window.
A SHRM-SCP practice test free of charge can help with terminology, but check whether it includes situational judgment items at all; a quiz of definitions trains only half of what the exam measures. Judge every set of SHRM-SCP practice exams by whether it explains why each option is right or wrong.

Real SHRM-SCP exam questions are confidential. Every candidate agrees not to discuss or disclose exam content orally or in writing, and not to copy, reproduce, disclose or transmit exam questions or answer choices. Collections sold as live SHRM-SCP test questions breach that agreement.
Legitimate SHRM-SCP questions for practice come from two places: material written for practice, and items SHRM itself has retired and published. Anything claiming to be from a current exam is neither.
